Yesterday we came down to find a little bluetit fledgling on our doorstep peeking in at the house. Safely moved away from dogs. We were then treated to the most magical experience of watching the nest of 5 fledge. And learn to fly to the high trees with parents. Good luck little darlings!
If anyone is on Instagram I have now set up an account as Facebook doesn’t seem to want anyone to see their posts.

A friend brought me a beautiful Elephant hawk moth cocoon a few months ago, he nearly trod on it when clearing the garden. We have kept it safe in one of our large butterfly nets all this time. It has finally hatched! My daughter & I are sooooo excited! Isn’t it the most beautiful creature! We will be releasing this evening weather permitting 😍😍😍😍😍😍

We have residents! We have 4 beautiful Wrendale Designs by Hannah Dale bird boxes that went up in autumn last year and I’m over the moon to see them in use with bluetits very busy making nests. Hoping to catch some photos of young when the time comes. They were used all over winter too for sheltering. Some pics of one of the boxes yesterday.

I saw a few of these beautiful birds today so I was absolutely thrilled. The Yellowhammer. Sadly on the red list in the UK. Below from the Rspb explains why.

Yellowhammers in brief

The UK yellowhammer population fell by 54 per cent between 1970 and 1998*. The main factor is low overwinter survival, probably because fewer seed food sources are available to them on farmland.

*Data source: British Trust for Ornithology

Key points

Maintain short, thick hedges and ditches with wide margins for nesting.
Flower-rich margins are better for insects than grass margins.
Do not trim hedgerows before September, as the late nests of yellowhammers are the most important for overall productivity.
Ensure there is at least one good seed food source throughout the winter.
