Still trying to capture some planetary images. This is an image of Jupiter taken on 15th January. Much improvement still to come but I can start to see something like the sort of result I'm aiming for. Pleased to have captured the Great Red Spot and the moon Io.

I've been trying to focus on planetary and lunar photography for a couple of weeks which is a whole new ball game compared to my usual deep space images. Lots to learn and I'm not making a huge amount of progress so far.

Here is an image of the latest full moon with its natural colours brought out as part of the post processing. The Moon’s surface material, known as regolith, has subtle colour differences dictated by the mineral composition in different areas.

This type of image is often described as a mineral moon.

The stars are from a different image as the full moon is so bright the background stars don't usually show up.

You've got to start somewhere.😀

The forecast was poor for last night however it did unexpectedly clear up for just over 3 hours which allowed me to grab some time on the Heart Nebula.

The Heart Nebula, also known as the Running Dog Nebula, is an emission nebula, 7,500 light-years away from Earth and located in the Perseus Arm of the Galaxy in the constellation Cassiopeia. It displays glowing ionized hydrogen gas and darker dust lanes.

The light we are viewing left the nebula around Around 7,500 years ago (c. 5500 BC) when humanity was in the Neolithic (New Stone Age), characterized by the rise of farming, early metal use and evolving human-plant relationships, with evidence of early agriculture in North Africa. It was a dynamic period of transition from nomadic hunting/gathering to settled agrarian life.

Here is a reworking of some images I gathered in Dec 24 of the Orion Nebula.

The Core is very bright making it difficult to produce an image that is not burned out in that area. By combining different exposure values and using a few new stretching techniques, I think I've managed to get a decent result.

The Orion Nebula is a diffuse nebula situated south of Orion's Belt and is known as the middle "star" in the "sword" of Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. It is about 1,350 light-years away and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth.

The light that makes up this image left the nebula around 675AD, a time in the Early Middle Ages when the Byzantine Empire was powerful under Emperor Constantine IV, Anglo-Saxon kingdoms were developing in England, the Islamic Golden Age flourished with scientific and cultural advancements, and China was under the Tang Dynasty, a golden era of art and poetry.

Here's my latest image of the North America Nebula taken own a recent moonless night from my back garden in Strathaven.

This image has 3 hours of exposure using narrowband filters.

The North America Nebula is an emission nebula found in the Cygnus constellation, glowing due to the ionisation of interstellar gas caused by radiation being emitted by hot, young stars.

NGC 7000 is located 1,700 lightyears away and measures 100 lightyears across.

The light hitting my camera sensor to capture this image left the nebula around the year 325 AD, a pivotal time when the Roman Empire was shifting, Christianity was becoming dominant and significant cultural changes were occurring globally, including early Indian empires, Chinese dynasties, and evolving societies in the Americas and Africa, long before the "Age of Sail" or modern Europe.

To the right of the image you can see part of IC 5070, nicknamed the Pelican Nebula.

My galaxy skills are a bit rusty so I will probably have another go at this again soon but for now, here is my latest image of our closest galactic neighbour Andromeda.

This galaxy is 2.5 million light years away from us and about 200,000 light years across. When the light that makes up the image left Andromeda it was the beginning of the Paleolithic period or early Stone Age when early humans lived in caves or simple huts or tepees and were hunters and gatherers. They used basic stone and bone tools, as well as crude stone axes, for hunting birds and wild animals The hominin population (early human ancestors) on Earth 2.5 million years ago was extremely small, likely in the tens or hundreds of thousands globally.

Imaged from my back garden in Strathaven.

It's been a while, mainly due to house extension and renovations. I'm glad to say we're back into astro season again and for my first outing this year we were blessed with two nights of clear skies and no moon.

This is the SADR region, (also known as IC 1318 or the Gamma Cygni Nebula). It is a diffuse emission nebula surrounding the bright star Sadr (γ Cygni) at the centre of Cygnus's cross.

It is about 1800 Light years from Earth. The light in this image left the region in around 245AD.

The final image is 3 hours of SHO data plus separately imaged RGB stars all taken from my back garden in Strathaven.

View it large if you can.

In the summer months I like to try a few macro shots. I've been trying for a few weeks to get a shot of a damsel fly that I felt was good enough to post here and though they may not be perfect, I liked these two taken at Baron's Haugh a couple of nights ago.

This was a tricky one to process and I'll probably come back to it again at some time.

The image is of the Jellyfish Nebula (IC443) which is a galactic supernova remnant in the constellation Gemini. It is around 5,000 light years from Earth.

It was shot from my back garden in Strathaven and combines data from several nights across the last couple of years. In total it has around 12hrs 45mins of exposure time using narrowband filters.

Something a bit unusual today. While imaging last night I thought I would try shooting some star trails. I obviously got the settings wrong and also had no way of protecting the lens from the cold. So a total disaster I thought after the lens froze over. I was pleasantly surprised to see the stacked image this morning looking like some abstract piece of art. See what you think. I'll try and do it properly tonight.😀

Best Viewed Large if you can.
