As the development of vtol for our fixed wing drone continues it had us thinking...
the extra payload and drag of the vtol system will inevitably have an effect on range and efficiency. Whilst it will have its advantages in restricted areas mission time will inevitably be reduced. The current take off distance (on grass, shown above) is around 15 meters with a 2kg payload, less than a tennis court
vtol will be a great option but at a cost.
When it comes to endurance and range, fixed-wing aircraft still lead the way.
🔹 Longer Flight Time – Fixed wings generate lift from their wings, not their motors, meaning far less energy is wasted.
🔹 Greater Range – More efficient aerodynamics = covering longer distances on the same battery.
🔹 Higher Payload Capacity – More lift efficiency means more room for sensors, cameras, or cargo.
🔹 Proven Reliability – Fewer moving parts than VTOL systems = simpler, lighter, and more dependable.
🔹 Short Takeoff Ready – With the right design (like ours!), a fixed-wing needs only a short run to get airborne.
VTOL has its place for tight spaces, but when you want endurance, efficiency, and scale, fixed-wing is king.
