The Last Sunset over the Big Mill
One final golden goodbye to a true Leek landmark.
For generations, the old mill as stood tall and proud, watching over the town as the sun set behind its iconic silhouette. Last Night's sunset felt especially poignant — knowing it would be the very last times this building would glow against the sky.
A powerful piece of Staffordshire’s industrial history has now been lost. Rest in peace, Big Mill. You’ll be missed by many.

💔 Leek’s Big Mill Is Gone
In 1857, a giant rose on Mill Street in Leek — the Big Mill, a striking six-storey silk mill with its iconic tower, designed by the renowned local architect William Sugden.
For generations, it powered the town’s textile boom. Wardle & Davenport made the mill famous in the late 1800s, employing thousands of local people and pioneering the production of artificial silk (rayon) stockings. Later, Peri-Lusta continued production there until the early 1990s.
For over 130 years, it was the heartbeat of Leek. The sound of looms clattered day and night, families were fed, and silk and thread were sent across the world.
But after falling silent and standing derelict for years, tragedy struck on the evening of Friday 27th March 2026.
A huge fire ripped through the empty Grade II listed building. Flames lit up the sky for miles around as nearby residents were evacuated and fire crews battled the blaze through the night.
By Saturday morning, 28th March, the proud old mill had been gutted. The fire left it structurally unsound, with parts at serious risk of collapse.
Demolition teams have now moved in. What remains of Leek’s historic Big Mill is being brought down to safe levels in the coming days.
This wasn’t just bricks and mortar. It was part of the town’s soul — a living piece of its industrial heritage.
A piece of Leek has been lost forever. 😔
If you or your family ever worked at the Big Mill, Wardle & Davenport, or Peri-Lusta, please share your memories below. Let’s keep the stories alive, even though the building is gone. It must be remembered.
