This one was a little different for me, being my first explore of a cinema, and I really enjoyed it! It’s quite sad to see a place like this that was once filled with people and happy noise, now stood silent, empty and getting quickly trashed by hoards of bored kids. It was interesting to see what was behind every door in the building, and how it all works. So, a bit about the cinema. This 14 screen cinema was one of the first multi-screen venues open up in Manchester in October 1989. It then spent 30 years (and 4 months) proving drinks, snacks and the latest films, as well as some flashbacks such as Die hard (the Christmas movie) that they screened to celebrate its 30 year anniversary. In March 2020 when the world ground to a holt due to the covid 19 pandemic, this cinema closed its doors along with the rest. Sadly, in October 2020 it was announced that this one would not be opening its doors to the public anymore. It’s now been demolished and there will soon be a shiny new school in its place.

I do enjoy exploring the more recently deserted buildings that are still mostly or fully intact, with plenty of belongings to tell a story. But… my passion leans mostly towards the damaged, decayed old buildings that nature is claiming for its own. And this place is quite a nice little example of that.
Once a school for privileged girls, parts of this building are reputed to date back to around the 1600’s. It became a cozy, family friendly pub that welcomed dogs and served food daily. Patrons could enjoy a drink in the main bar area, eat a meal in the separate dining area, play darts in the small games room, or in finer weather, benefit from some fresh country air in the beer garden at the back. Until it fell victim to arson in 2015. The blaze broke out on the ground floor at around 7:30pm on a cold, winter, Monday night, and quickly spread to the living area upstairs causing extensive damage and the abandonment of this pub. Planning permission has been applied for to build four two storey houses where the remains of the pub is doing its best to stay standing. So I’m glad I got the chance to get acquainted with this cute little place before it’s lost for good.

This is my visit to a well known, well visited workhouse/psychiatric hospital. It’s not in the best of conditions inside, in fact it’s a well trashed death trap of a place. But on the outside this building is just beautiful… well, if you don’t mind a bit of a bowed roof, boarded up windows and doors, and trees taking residence in just about every bit of guttering. For me, this all just adds to its charm. I think it’s stunning! And it will always have a special place in my heart.
