Caledonian Canal / Great Glen Way - Day 2
Clunes to Fort Augustus
30km on the dot.

After trying to post these pics for the 5th time now I’m so close to rage quitting and denying I ever went to Scotland.

My second day started at 6am which is frankly unacceptable in my book. It was cold and wet but I needed an early start to avoid the potentially troublesome winds on Loch Lochy.

There was something quite enjoyable about starting so early, even if it was wet. The water was a little rougher than ideal and I toyed with paddling the 2km or so to the other side of the Loch to the safer, more protected side. Every time I tested the waters, literally and figuratively, I was strongly reminded to stay where I was or I might end up going for a swim.
I caught up with an organised group of sea kayakers when I stopped for a break. It was nice to see that I wasn’t the only person out in one. Their guide, Stewart was really generous with advice and that’s always handy on a trip like this.

The weather did the usual Scottish thing of changing every few minutes but I was getting a few promising minutes of sunshine, until the next downpour that is.

As the Loch narrowed I was advised to move across to avoid the ‘magnet’ of a sandbank that I didn’t want to find myself on and got a little closer to a road. You could hear a little traffic noise at times but at one point I could hear what I assumed was some sort of loud lorry. Then it got louder and a few seconds later 4 ($100M) F-35’s flew over my head and scared the life out of me. It was bluddy cool though.

A little while later I arrived at Laggan Locks. The other type of lock! I made a bit of a mistake here and struggled to get out of my boat on a jetty that made a bit of a mess of my hand. It turned out there was a much easier way off the water hidden round the corner but I couldn’t have known. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Francesca met me before heading along what turned out to be a very pretty canal as was Loch Oich. I met up with the kayakers again and was invited for lunch then I went on my way. It was all plain sailing until I reached Fort Augustus.

Caledonian Canal - Day 1
Banavie - Clunes
17.5km

It was a wet start to the day which turned out to be a bit of a theme. Headed off from the “Neptune’s Staircase“ locks in Banavie, Fort William. There was a led group in Canoes getting on at the same time and I ended being joined by a few groups at the end of the day. The paddle was easy enough, I made really good progress and was sheltered from the wind for the most part. The weather was nuts. The first video with the rain was fairly typical. The second pic in glorious sunshine was a few minutes later. It was like that all day which made it interesting at least! Ben Nevis is hiding in the clouds behind the lighthouse in the image. It remained hidden for the most part, occasionally revealing the snow towards its peak. Gairlochy was the original goal but due to parking logistics (And I was happy for more paddling) we ended up camping in a forrest in Clunes, 6km further. It took me on to the imaginatively named Loch Locky. I was advised to be a little careful here and keep right where it was more sheltered. I went left, as I didn’t have a lot of choice and the water was odd. Choppy and unpredictable in parts, doing its best to push me in to the bank at other times. It was fun. Mostly.

The night was very wet which made cooking amusing and the midges gave our meal the protein boost nobody asked for.

I’m about to attempt another adventure with the Caledonian Canal. 100km from Fort William to Inverness via Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness. I start tomorrow but the weather (specifically the wind) is going to be the biggest issue that quite possibly may derail things as it can make it dangerous, especially as I’m going solo. Aside from that, the sideways rain isn’t all that much fun to paddle in😂

This is Gairlochy Lighthouse in front of Loch Lochy where my first day should end. 🤞🏼

I feel lucky to have actually caught a rare hot summers day on a paddle around Wast Water in the Lake District on my mission to circumnavigate the largest bodies of water in the UK.

A pretty special moment at . From seeing stars, galaxies, planets, satellites and having my mind blown at the sheer enormity of space, getting to walk away with a photo of the moon was pretty exciting too.

Shoutout to these little floaty flags that helped me avoid the breaking waves that would definitely have ruined my day kayaking.

Thinking about a last minute gig a few months ago with Riopy (), a fantastic pianist. He was completely unknown to me at the time but I’m really glad I went. 😊
