There is always a moment during an event when you know it has truly landed.

It is not when the speaker walks on stage.
It is not when the slides appear.
It is when the audience leans forward.
When people stop checking their phones.
When laughter spreads across the room.
When applause starts before the final slide.
That is when the energy shifts.

As an event photographer, those are the moments I am watching for.Because those are the images that tell the real story of a conference, awards evening or corporate event.

Event organisers here: what moment tells you that your event is going well?

On Monday I shared why property photography should not be rushed.
Here is the other side of that conversation.
When a property goes live, buyers decide in seconds whether to keep looking or scroll past.
If the visuals feel rushed:
Rooms look smaller.
Light feels flat.
The home blends into every other listing.
Good property photography is not just about documenting a home.
It is about presenting it in a way that attracts attention, builds interest and encourages viewings.
Slowing down during a shoot makes a real difference to how a property is perceived online.

How long should a property shoot take?

Long enough to do it properly.

Rushed photography shows.
Light not quite right.
Angles that feel slightly off.
Small details left in frame.

When there is time, everything settles.

Time to walk the property first.
Time to adjust blinds and lamps.
Time to let natural light do its thing.
Time to get the small details right.

Property photography is not just about turning up and taking pictures. It is about presenting a home with care and helping it feel its best on camera.

Patience makes a difference.

Every event tells a story.

Not just on stage, but in the moments in between.

The laughter.
The conversations.
The energy in the room.

Event photography is about more than coverage. It is about capturing the atmosphere, the connections and the feeling people take away with them.

From formal functions to community celebrations, those candid moments are often the ones that matter most afterwards.

Great venues do more than host events. They shape how they feel.

Photographing events at places like the Repertory Theatre in Birmingham is a reminder of how architecture, light and space all play a part in the story. From the moment people arrive to how they engage with speakers, the venue quietly sets the tone.

When I photograph events, I always look to capture not just what happens on stage, but how people experience the space around it.

A great example of why education events matter.
It was a pleasure to photograph the recent Education Insights event at the Repertory Theatre in Birmingham. A day filled with thoughtful keynote speakers, teaching award winners and representatives from schools across the region, all coming together to share ideas and celebrate impact.
Events like this are about people as much as programmes, and capturing that atmosphere is always a privilege.

Catching moments like this is often about patience rather than speed.
A quiet pause by the water, watching the light change, and then everything lines up for a second. The simplicity of flight, clean lines, and calm movement against a busy background.
These are the moments I enjoy photographing most. No rush, just being present and ready when it happens.

I’ve always liked photographing moments like this.
Someone in the audience lifting their phone to capture a keynote speaker, completely absorbed in what’s being said.

It’s a small detail, but it says a lot. Engagement, attention, and a moment that mattered enough to be remembered. I often look out for these scenes at events and weddings because they quietly show connection without needing the spotlight.

Sometimes the story isn’t just on stage. It’s in how people respond to it.

It’s been a wet few days lately.
Grey skies, steady rain and soggy walks.
But not everyone minds. Watching this duck carrying on as if nothing had changed was a good reminder that what feels like poor weather to some is perfectly good weather to others.
Sometimes it’s just about adapting and seeing things a little differently.

One of the first things people say to me before a headshot session is,

“I’m not very comfortable in front of the camera.”

That’s completely normal. In fact, most of the people I photograph feel exactly the same way. Very few arrive feeling confident, relaxed and ready to pose. My job isn’t to turn anyone into a model, it’s to create an environment where they can simply be themselves.

The best headshots don’t come from forcing smiles or holding stiff poses. They come from comfort, conversation and a calm approach.

Quiet places have a way of slowing everything down.
Walking through old stone like this, you can’t help but notice the layers of history. Arches shaped by hand, weathered edges, light falling where it has done for centuries. No rush, no noise, just space to look and breathe.
These are the moments that remind me why I enjoy taking a camera out without an agenda. Just noticing what’s already there.
