A little something different...
Earlier this year I was commissioned to create the props, branding and display elements for Elizabeth Scarlett | Embrace your Nature trade stand at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
From initial sketches and CAD concepts through to hand-building and finishing the cart, creating the branding and bespoke fittings, right through to setting up and installing the stand on site, this was a project that took me right back to where it all started many many years ago.
Woodwork was my first love, having spent many years tinkering in the workshop with my Dad, so after years of working predominantly with metal, it was really nice to spend time creating in timber again. It's a completely different material, in some ways less precise, but in many ways feels much more hands-on. There's something special about shaping, fitting and finishing wood that never really leaves you.
This project will always be a special one for me. Not only because the stand went on to achieve a 5-star award, but because it became one of the last projects that my Dad got to be involved with before we sadly lost him after a very short battle with cancer.
Even when he was really ill, he couldn't help but supervise in the workshop. Carpentry was his thing, along with collecting a ridiculous number of tools and machines, considering it was pretty much a hobby for him. He always liked to have the correct role for the job though! I'm forever grateful to my Dad for passing those skills on to me and giving me the confidence to tinker and make things with my hands.
I wouldn’t be doing what I do if it wasn’t for him.
A little bit of Big Ted lives on in these pictures.

The tune by Mark Knopfler is what I played at his funeral this week. One of his favourite songs and the reason I learned to play the saxophone.
