On the first day of the new Commonwealth Games, here's a look back at Glasgow's last big adventure in 2014. I was hired by the marketing team to photograph free public events across the city centre.
Time to show off the fresh paint and clean streets, the big makeover undertaken to impress our international visitors. Volunteers, locals and tourists of all ages were bursting with excitement and fun; there was a real sense of community spirit. So much has changed since then. I hope the 2026 Games bring some of that much-missed atmosphere to Glasgow.
Fun fact: this job was done at a couple of hours' notice. I was in the middle of cleaning out my guinea pigs' cage (yes, that's still very on brand) when I got the call that Sunday afternoon. Cue chaos as I rushed to sort out the pigs and have a shower and prep my kit and get out the door to take plenty of shots before the rain came on. I'd like to say I get more warning for shoots these days but, tbh, it's almost as daft 12 years later.
