There’s something rather special about seeing a piece of your own work leave the gallery wall and go to a new home.

I’m delighted to say that Impressions of Manchester 1, currently exhibited as part of the Shrewsbury Art Trail at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, has been sold.

This image is part of my ongoing exploration of what I call Photographic Impressionism: using photography not simply to record what a place looks like, but to try to capture something of how it feels. The atmosphere, the mood, the memory of being there.

And, if I’m honest, this sale means more to me than simply selling a photograph.

There is always a degree of vulnerability in putting more creative, personal work out into the world. Somewhere beneath the confidence is that little voice asking, does anyone else see what I see in this? Having someone look at something I have created and decide that they actually want to own it is an incredibly rewarding form of validation.

It’s a reminder that perhaps these more experimental and impressionistic images do connect with people after all.

So, to whoever you are who has bought this photograph: thank you. I hope it gives you something of the atmosphere I felt when I made it, and that you enjoy living with it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

And thank you to everyone who has stopped to look at my work during the Art Trail. It genuinely means a lot.

I spent some time in Liverpool the other day, continuing my exploration of Photographic Impressionism.

For me, it is about looking beyond the literal photograph and trying to capture something more elusive: the atmosphere of a place, the movement of people, the energy of the streets and the fleeting impressions that stay with us long after we have passed through them.

Liverpool felt like a perfect place to explore that idea. Its architecture, light, movement and character offer endless possibilities for interpretation.

These are some of the images that emerged from that exploration.

Great art deserves to be seen.

As a practising photographic artist myself, I understand how important it is that artists and their work are represented well.

That’s at the heart of RED DOT, my specialist photography service for artists, galleries and the wider art world.

I photograph artists and their creative practice, produce high-quality reproductions of artwork and document exhibitions.

But, just as with my other commercial photography, the starting point isn’t simply making a good photograph. It’s understanding what that photograph needs to do.

It might be helping an artist present their work professionally, supporting an exhibition or providing strong imagery for promotion and publication.

You create the work. My job is to create the images that help people see it.

Last week I introduced my new long-term photography project, This Is Us: Portraits of Contemporary Britain, and I was genuinely encouraged by the response and the suggestions people shared.

I’ve now written a little more about the thinking behind the project, why environmental portraiture is so important to me, and what I hope this body of work will become over the coming years.

I’m beginning a new long-term photography project called This Is Us: Portraits of Contemporary Britain.

I’m looking for people, groups and organisations whose lives, work or purpose say something about who we are as a nation today.

Do you know an individual with an inspiring story? A community group making a difference? An organisation, club or business that plays an important role in local life?

If so, I’d love to hear about them. Leave a comment or send me a message explaining why you think they should be considered.

This is a curated project, so I’m looking for suggestions rather than volunteers, and participation will be by invitation.
