It's not just gannets who engage in a bit of beautiful bonding!

This guillemot pair are allopreening - mutual preening to strengthen social bonds and maintain their feathers.

Who doesn't love a good head scratch? Just look at its little face! 😊

*Full Disclosure - Major Bird Nerd Moment incoming!* 😁

I was thrilled to get the chance to both see and photograph a bridled guillemot up close at RSPB Bempton Cliffs last week. I'd seen them before at the Farnes, but never as well as this one.

A genetic variation of the common guillemot rather than a separate species, the distinctive eye ring and bespectacled appearance is caused by a DNA mutation, providing a striking and characterful look!

Around 2% of the guillemot population at Bempton are bridled with percentages increasing the further north you go - suggesting this variation of the bird may have a greater tolerance to the cold.

A real treat to see - and to share with you!

📷 Landing Gear Engaged

It's quite a thing to stand close to gannets as they come in to land - the largest seabird in the North Atlantic, their wingspan is around 180cm - or 6 feet - wide. Incredibly elegant in flight, that all changes as they approach the clifftop feet-first, becoming almost clumsy - but ultimately in perfect control.

📷 Guillemot photographed mid-preen, Bempton Cliffs

Preening is an important activity for seabirds, spreading waterproof oils across their feathers, improving their aerodynamics both in flight and in the water, and removing dirt and parasites.

Important, functional and practical - and done with such an air of peace and serenity. Beautiful.

While the gannets and occasional puffins are always the draw at Bempton, it's worth remembering to keep an eye out for the many other species too - especially those who usually slip beneath the birder's radar, like this gorgeous pair of herring gulls.

Quintessential British seaside birds, there is plenty of interest about them - the splashes of orangey-red against vibrant yellow; their delicate colouring; the adaptation of special salt glands above their eyes which allows them to drink sea water. And that red spot on the underside of the bill? When a chick pecks at it, it triggers the adult to regurgitate food for them.

Wonderful birds.

I love gannets. They're so distinctive - elegant and striking birds that are so enticing to photograph.

There are 220,000 pairs of them nesting around the coast in the UK and Ireland - that's more than 50% of the world population. I was watching them fly in to gather nesting material from the clifftop earlier this week, when this absolute beauty popped its head up for a perfect portrait shot. 🤍
