"So out of my comfort zone," she wrote, "but think I need that push to show off the hard work."

Those were Hollie's words when she got in touch about a solo shoot to celebrate her 4-stone weight loss and reaching her goal weight. My heart soared. I love these shoots. Empowering women, making them feel seen and safe and special and supported, is a privilege.

Hollie was nervous when I met her at Walmer beach but, after a few warm-up shots, she seemed to have forgotten her fears.

This is not a portrait of a woman with a 'perfect' body. This is a portrait of courage, discipline, accountability, perseverance, and belief. This portrait has not come easy. It has been fought for. There is a story behind it, as there is with all the portraits in my Making Waves series.

"I am so glad I did this," Hollie said at the end. The fact she'd said that before even seeing any of the images just shows that my photoshoots aren't just photoshoots. They are experiences. Therapeutic moments to feel, reflect, and be. The process of acquiring the photographs is as important as the photographs themselves.

It is very gratifying to be able to run workshops which gives people a few minutes to themselves, being present with their thoughts and feelings, amongst the setting sun and tweet of roosting birds.

Thank you to .fitness_ for bringing her tribe to my cold water workshop. I enjoyed delivering thoughts on 1) getting out of our comfort zone, 2) regulating our emotions, and 3) letting go of control

but most of all, I enjoyed hearing what everyone else had to say on the subjects. That, I believe, is the most important part of it all - starting conversations which enable us to see the similarities between us all.

Thank you to the calm and collected

SUNDAY 24TH MAY
LIFE LESSONS FROM COLD WATER
sunset workshop

This is not just about sitting in cold water.

This is therapy. An antidote for those who feel a bit wobbly and unsettled.

A call to try a new tool which will help you revive, restore and rediscover your authentic self.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve been providing support and encouragement to lots of other curious people who are interested in using ice baths as a tool to improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

Cold water has brought a lot of self awareness and energy into my own life and I aim to pass that on in these workshops. In a cosy fairylit setting, we will talk about endorphins, stress release, dopamine highs, stronger immune systems, emotional regulation, pain relief…

…and how cold water immersion is a good analogy for so much we encounter in our daily lives, teaching us difficult times do pass, so much can be overcome by simple breathing, we are adaptable human beings…

…and lots more.

We’ll be using  - the best ice bath product out there 🙌🏻

I guarantee you a safe space where you can relax and be yourself, as well as the camaraderie of like-minded women. You’ll be well looked after and will definitely go home feeling surprised and energised.

Drop a comment below or DM me for more details! I’d love to chat.

I have been accompanying people struggling with mental health issues to a swimming lake for a few years and I have learned that sometimes the lake achieves what the counselling room does not. I have seen people release a lifetime's worth of tears when they enter the water. It is as though the cold grip of the water gives them the chance to say what they cannot put into words. These moments reaffirm for me just how much human beings need nature. Perhaps its 'healing power' is an overused term but it is entirely true. I have seen how men and women emerge from the lake as complete beings. They likely would not have felt the same way after lapping a swimming pool. It is nature which touches them and changes them. Nature completes them. A microcosm for the entire world, the lake reaffirms just how vital it is that we protect nature for our survival, not fight it. When nature thrives, we do too.

My Making Waves sessions are more than just photoshoots.

They are a space to feel, reflect, and be.

They are a moment in time when your story is heard and gently captured.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of photographing a diverse collection of women on Kent beaches. We have reflected on many of life’s defining experiences such as the transition to motherhood, navigating the menopause, processing grief, finding one’s identity, the power of creativity, recovering from illness, surviving abuse, fighting for the planet.

As a photographer, counsellor, and writer, I have lots of insight into what makes a woman feel safe and supportive. To be honest, the sea does most of it.

Sometimes I worry that people might not trust my images. They look too good to be true. They have been Photoshopped and A.I'd. The globule of setting sun looks like I've superimposed it. I worry that my portraits may be disregarded by people because, at first glance, they look like a collection of perfect people strolling around on perfect beaches looking perfect. Truth is, I edit my images minimally, for they are usually well exposed and composed and I want them to remain natural. I also urge people to read the captions alongside all the portraits for this is where they’ll find the imperfection. The real, relatable depth. I need them to understand that I am not hunting for perfection for where there is perfection there is no story to tell and, in my opinion, no portrait to take. My captions are as important as the image, perhaps even more.

“I’m at my most present when I don’t know where I’m going to sleep that night...”

Last month, I met and interviewed travel writer Adam Weymouth in sunny Margate and, out of all the insights he gave me into his writing process, that quote was certainly one which stood out. It epitomised freedom and exploration and purposeful, hard graft. All things I treasure myself. Needless to say, I smiled when I saw that, this week, Adam's won the Sherborne Prize for Travel Writing for his book Lone Wolf which had taken him on a far-reaching journey and had required him to do all of that sleeping in random places.

In Lone Wolf, Adam walks in the path of a young wolf named Slavc who set out from Slovenia in 2011. Tracked by GPS, the wolf travelled a thousand miles through the Alps, arriving four months later on the Lessinian plateau near Verona. There had been no wolves in northern Italy for a century, but Slavc crossed paths with a female wolf on a walkabout of her own. A decade later and there are more than a hundred wolves back in the area, the result of their remarkable meeting. As Adam follows Slavc's trail, he examines the changes facing these wild corners of Europe. Whilst it's a book about a wolf, it is more far-reaching than that. I felt as though I was there with the author for much of his journey, walking alongside him, meeting a diverse range of people and hearing their stories around migration and climate change and politics. I was moved by the book, even changed by it. I know quite a lot about wolves now and my eyes are open to the conflict between re-wilding these animals and the cost to humans.

"I love getting to the bottom of something," Adam told me. "The whole point of my work is trying to get different people to be able to talk to each other. I have received emails from people featured in the book who are pleased they’ve had their voices heard. That, to me, genuinely feels much more significant than getting a good review.”

That may be so, but I imagine receiving a prestigious literary award feels absolutely blimmin' amazing.
