The end of summer can bring melancholy. Back to work and school and routine. But with that comes a chance to reflect on all that has been. Memories have been made. You didn't even realise you were making them. You were just having fun...

What I loved about this exhibition was the insight into Frida Kahlo's ‘many selves’ – the dedicated wife, the intellectual, the modern artist, and the political activist.

She embodied many overlapping identities throughout her life. She bridged European and Mexican roots, had sexual relationships with both men and women, rejecting conventional 20th-century sexual norms. She wore traditional dresses celebrating indigenous female power. She also cross-dressed in men’s suits and cropped her hair. Moreover, Frida transformed chronic physical suffering from polio and a bus accident into direct artistic expression.

Frida Kahlo’s work led me to reflect on how physical and emotional can be harnessed for creative expression, how trauma lives in parts of the brain that regular words cannot easily reach, and how creativity gives these feelings a shape. I know that I have used photography and writing to make sense of loneliness, depression, substance abuse, and overall conflict and confusion.

The exhibition also caused me to reflect on my own identity, or identities. Mother. Wife. Photographer. Writer. Counsellor. Cold water therapist. At times, it has been a challenge to enable all to exist. Sometimes they’ve seemed incompatible with each other and yet, now, I finally feel they all have their place, just like Frida’s did.

A beautiful and thought provoking exhibition, on until January 2027.

Every woman deserves to be called beautiful at least once a day...and every woman deserves to be photographed at least once in her life by a professional who knows how to truly see her. Not for vanity. Not for validation. But because the right photographer has the ability to reflect something back that most women slowly forget in the rhythm of daily life.
