Varosha, Cyprus - June 2025.
Well, it's been a long time hasn't it.
This is a part of the city of Famagusta in the current Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,
During the 1950's, 1960's and early 1970's it was the top destination in Europe with holiday makers and film stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot frequenting the place, it had it all, the longest beaches on the island, designer outlets, restaurants as well as local families living in the area.
This was up until a Greek Cypriot led Coup D'etat in July 1974 amid rising tensions between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots which the Turkish military responded to with a full scale invasion with paratroopers and air raids taking 36.2% of the island, which the Cypriot National guard at the time could not compete with, so the UN was forced to intervene and established a buffer zone between the Turkish and Greek sides which remains to this day.
The people of Varosha were given just one hour to evacuate by Turkish forces and were promised they would return as soon as possible, 51 years later their homes, belongings and former lives still remain trapped in 1974, they have never returned.
Varosha was totally closed off to the public between 1974 and 2005 when the beach in front of the three hotels in a row on the photo was opened, however photography was strictly prohibited, and remained this way until 2021 when it was finally opened to the public which provides an eye opening experience into what was lost.
I have been here before 3 times and have never seen most of what is captured on my images.
Absolutely incredible experience but very sad to see what was lost 51 years ago.
