Finally got round to playing with this gorgeous 1:1 capable Minolta macro lens I’ve had for a year. The prints need work, but by god it was far too hot in the darkroom last night!

enjoys having a niche hobby within a niche hobby - collecting glass slide negatives. There is something fascinating about images that have been around for close to 100years, being seen, scanned and printed for maybe the first time since they were taken. It really makes you think - how permanent are the images we take now, how long with they last?

For people who like Black and White photos, we sure spend a lot of time using the colour red. Here I am holding a filter infront of a lens because A) I forgot the holder and B B) to darken anything blue, in this case the sky!

One of my top darkoom tips is to make a simple localised test strip device, and use f stop timings. This humble, tea and chemical stained device is just made from some bits of mat board, black card and masking tape. By seeing the same portion of the print, in either 1/2 or 1/3 stop increments, I’m often able to identify exposure, contrast grade, and dodge/burn times with a single 5x2” test strip. This ended up grade 2, 14 seconds, with a grade 5 burn of 10 seconds, just from one strip. F stop timings are more intuitive than arbitrary increments, and make more sense when scaling prints to a different size, or calculating burns.

Some days I just can’t get my eye in with burning in, and today was one of those days. Three sheets of paper wasted before I decided to return on a day when I’ve had more sleep.

That chemistry GCSE that Rob just about scraped didn’t go to waste. (Ok, it did, but it’s all good fun)

had fun taking photos of Rob at the weekend - variously using extension tubes to get closer. What do you think suits Rob more - serious or not serious?
