GUESS WHO THIS IS?

I'd be amazed if anyone got this! 🤣

Photo is from 1966 and was taken at a church just North of Whitby. He was a VERY important person somewhere - and he's not English! That's the only clues you get!

I've just spent a couple of hours scanning, and editing this job from our archive with a total of only 3 negatives in the packet, but a lot of digital editing, cleaning up decades of dust and scratches.

See photo before and after editing, and that's just one small area of the original image!

I will post them soon.

Stephen Joseph – Founder of Theatre in the Round.

Pictured here working from his bed on January 28th 1967, not long before he sadly passed away.

Stephen Joseph (1921–1967) was a visionary British theatre pioneer who founded the UK's first professional theatre-in-the-round company.

Joseph served as the principal mentor and teacher to a young Alan Ayckbourn, employing him as an actor and challenging him to write his very own plays. Ayckbourn eventually took over Joseph’s Scarborough company, cementing its reputation for world premieres.

Negative Treasures - 'Memories Made Visible'.

If you're from Scarborough - We probably have photos of your relatives and/or old friends in our archive.

This is a unique and extensive 'heritage' negative archive documenting people, places, events, and businesses in Scarborough and the surrounding areas for over 60 years.

Most is still in negative format. But the more we scan, the more image treasures we unveil.

I can't do this massive project without you. So, any support is greatly appreciated. All our scanned and edited photos are eventually uploaded to our website (in Bio) and are available to purchase via prints and framed options.

This is not an easy process. Every photo has over an hours scanning and editing work behind it - at least! Digitally removing decades of dust and scratches makes this a very time-consuming project.

But it's so rewarding , when I read the lovely comments and stories from people after they see these photos.

'Frozen moments in time'

Thank you. Keith

I wonder where the children in this photo are now, who or what they became, and what they achieved in life? 🤔

Did you know?

The Scarborough Photo Archive contains hundreds of thousands of images spanning six decades of local history.

SEARCH SERVICE

While the vast majority of the collection still remains in its original negative format and has yet to be digitised, we maintain a detailed job index that allows us to search for keywords linked to past assignments.

This means we can often search for people, places, events, businesses, streets, schools, clubs and organisations photographed over the last 60 years.

There's a good chance we may have photographs of your family, friends, workplace, business, sports team or community event that you've never seen before.

If we locate photographs you're interested in, we can, for a nominal fee, produce low-resolution preview scans and a contact sheet from the original negatives. This allows you to review the images before deciding which ones you would like professionally scanned, printed or framed.
Every enquiry helps uncover another piece of Scarborough's history and brings more hidden images back into the light.

Let us uncover long lost photos for you that you can either cherish for personal use or licence to promote your business.

Please get in touch if you would like us to search for anything.
