Taken at Bass Rock, located in the outer Firth of Forth, Scotland, a pair of "billing" northern gannets.

Bass Rock is home to one of the largest concentration of northern gannets anywhere in the world. Their numbers were decimated following the devastating bird flu outbreak in 2022 but in 2025, using drone technology, researchers counted over 50,000 nests on this small island, suggesting a population of over 100,000 birds.

Mated pairs engage in a "billing" display, a mutual greeting and bonding gesture where two birds stand breast to breast with their necks and bills extended rubbing their beaks and entwining their necks.

After trying to catch up with these diving gannets around North Berwick in Scotland for about four hours, I finally got close enough to photograph them.

The Northern Gannet in my opinion can rightly claim to be one of the most spectacular seabirds. Just before entering the water at around 60 mph they fold their wings tightly against their bodies turning themselves into a living spear in preparation for diving 10-20 metres underwater to typically catch mackerel, herring, sand eels, sardines or haddock.

To protect themselves from the harsh impact of hitting the water their internal nostrils close just before impact, they have reinforced skull and neck muscles and they have air sacs beneath their skin acting like bubble wrap to absorb the shock

Wandering around the streets of Verona earlier this month was an absolute dream when it came to capturing black and white images of the amazing architecture - such as this beautiful colonnade just off the Piazza Bra.

With the male bird standing up to 1 metre tall with a wingspan up to 2.5 metres it was wonderful to see a real local success story today in the flesh with the reintroduction of the Great Bustard over the past 20 years

A really fantastic morning with the Great Bustard Group.......and to make it even more memorable got to ride around Salisbury Plain in an old (proper!) Land Rover Defender!

On Day 12 of my photographic '12 Days of Christmas' and with it being the last one I thought I would go a bit light hearted and mischievous.

This was taken in Interlaken [meaning between the lakes] in Switzerland....an area known for its adventure sports, including paragliding.

Hopefully, the majority will have a more gentle landing than this one....

On Day 11 of my photographic '12 Days of Christmas' its beautiful Mousehole in Cornwall - or as the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas described it - "the loveliest village in England".

I took this photo late afternoon as the sun was setting illuminating the clouds above.
...and if you haven't been I can recommend the Mousehole Christmas Lights which is a real sight to behold - with the Christmas just gone being their 61st year.

Another winter-time shot as I took this in February 2020, six weeks before we all went into the first lockdown - and is Day 10 of my photographic '12 Days of Christmas'.

I recall standing on the Millennium Bridge in central London and waiting for the right moment when there was a gap between runners, out for their run after work, going back and forth across the bridge.

The bridge was notorious for swaying excessively when it was first opened in June 2000 leading it to be closed for 18 months. All those years later that movement was still something to be mindful of when shooting from a tripod.

With such dreadful news coming out of Switzerland at the moment following the fire at a New Year party in Crans-Montana, I thought I'd post this photo on Day 9 of my photographic '12 Days of Christmas'.

This is Kandersteg in the southwest of Switzerland in the Bernese Oberland, less than 40 miles from where this horrific fire has taken place - such a beautiful area that is now experiencing so much heartbreak for so many lives lost.

Happy New Year......

With snow in the forecast for many over the coming days, I thought I'd opt for a snowy picture on Day 8 of my photographic '12 Days of Christmas' - and a scene that is very close to home.

To give it its proper name I believe, this is 'First Broad Drive' in Grovely Woods. The long straight 'drive', which I have run more times than I care to remember, traces the course of an earlier roman road that once ran from the Mendip lead mines to the channel ports - and as such has also been known as the 'Lead Way'.

The avenue lined with green and copper beeches was cut through the woods in the 1840's and is part of the Earl of Pembroke's Wilton Estate.

On Day 7 of my photographic '12 Days of Christmas' it's a photo I wanted to take on this day, New Years Eve, five years ago.

I wanted to come up with something that said goodbye to the year that brought the pandemic - a year that was utterly tragic for so many.
...and so on a cold, clear evening I set off into Salisbury with camera and tripod and captured what was for me a particularly poignant shot of Salisbury Cathedral across the moonlit water meadows.
