Beaters’ Day is an end-of-season UK tradition where the usual roles of a driven shoot are reversed: beaters and pickers-up take the guns, while others handle the beating. The day celebrates their work within the community at the close of the shooting season.
These black-and-white portraits of men, women, and children highlight rural people who do much to care for and protect the countryside, its landscapes, wildlife, and ways of life. Shot in a farmyard against a clean white background, the images focus on form, presence, and character.

Nicholas Juett, Artist, Cambridge
A pleasure to spend a day photographing Nicholas Juett at his Cambridge home studio, just a stone’s throw from where I grew up.

Surrounded by the objects and materials that echo through his work, the space feels intimate and familiar, full of quiet references to memory and everyday life. Working in charcoal, oil, and pencil, Nick moves between vividly coloured street façades, often titled by their postcodes, and more contemplative interiors, where ordinary objects take on shared meaning. Shaped by years in the United States and exhibited from New York to London, his paintings flow with a bold, instinctive use of colour that is unmistakably his.

Canon R5, natural light for the most part.

Amy Wilson, Potter, The Leach Pottery, St.Ives.

is currently the 2024 Studio Apprentice at the Leach Pottery.
Her beautifully considered tableware includes stamped mugs, teabowls, jugs and plates, finished in rich glazes such as Nuka, Amber, Shino, Tenmoku and Ash.

Amy’s confident brushwork, along with faceting and carved details, brings a quiet strength and individuality to each piece.

With her apprenticeship coming to a close in 2026, it will be interesting to see how her work evolves in the next chapter of her practice.

Tim Moynihan, Osteopath.

Finally spent a day photographing my friend at his North Hertfordshire osteopathy practice.

Tim is a highly sought-after osteopath, and his primary tools, of course, re his hands. He treats a wide range of conditions, from sports injuries to everyday aches and pains.

Outside work, he’s just as active: a devoted sports fan and all-round sports enthusiast. Rugby comes first, but he also plays golf, tennis, cricket, squash, darts, table tennis, skis, and keeps up with the gym, among many other activities.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree; both Tim’s father and grandfather were GPs. He has managed to blend his love of sports with a caring profession, focusing on keeping people moving and feeling their best. As Tim puts it, “At the end of the day, it’s all about caring.”

Thanks to , Fire Risk Assessor, for the treatment session.

Callum Cowie, The Leach Pottery, St.Ives.

Shot in the clay room where Callum preps clay from the studio potters the pottery uses stoneware clay from Doble’s pit in St Agnes, the same clay behind the original Leach Standard Ware. Strong, durable, and perfect for everyday use, it keeps the tradition of Leach and Hamada alive.A fifth Apprentice Potter to join the Production Studio Callum joined the Leach Pottery in 2024 as an Apprentice, and is learning the craft of pottery by making Leach Standard Ware.

Callum’s work is guided by an ongoing exploration of material and form, with a focus on simplicity and quiet clarity. Influenced by Japanese aesthetics, his practice is rooted in presence, allowing beauty to emerge naturally through the act of making. Cool, calming tones feature throughout his work, extending into the everyday moments his pieces are made for — a cup of coffee, a shared meal — gently elevating the ordinary through hand-crafted wares.

Britta James, Production Potter
It was such a pleasure to spend time in the main pottery, photographing the incredibly talented staff.
Being there, surrounded by the sounds and rhythms of the workshop, gave me a rare glimpse into the dedication, skill, and quiet artistry that shape their daily work.

Trained in Germany, followed a long-standing craft tradition of travelling to different potteries for “three years and a day” to learn, grow, and explore the cultural nuances of ceramics. She worked with potters in Germany, France, New Zealand, and England, and has been a permanent member of the production team at The Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall, since 2012.

Her work spans functional tableware and studio pieces, including soda-fired ware and porcelain. Recently, she contributed to the Leach Studio Exhibition A Potter’s Challenge, creating pieces inspired by an object from the Museum—each reflecting her own creative journey.

Free Climber, Ribblehead

Unless I’m behind a camera my fear of heights seems to intensify with age. For reasons I still can’t quite explain, the lens creates a strange sense of calm. I’ve photographed from the edges of skyscrapers and from super-high cherry pickers, yet the courage of free climbers still leaves me in awe. The way their minds are wired to move through such exposed, precarious spaces is something truly unique. It’s the ultimate expression of pushing boundaries and stepping far beyond comfort zones.

This work is available as a limited C-type matt archival print, signed and titled:40 × 30” (edition of 25)20 × 16” (edition of 50)

Ali Bassett, Studio 4, The Exchange, Penzance, Cornwall.
Painter, stitcher, maker of folktales, nature and memory and friend to Steven Seagull

What a pleasure it was to photograph Ali in her studio overlooking Penzance harbour. I always love stepping into other artists’ spaces, there’s something special about soaking up their materials, tools, inspirations and the atmosphere they create around themselves. Ali’s studio is full of all of that, and she happened to be in the middle of getting work ready for a gallery, which brought even more energy to the space. The composition, as is often the case, presented itself: beautiful window light and a little boost from one Profoto B1X head.

Super calm, originally creative and a technically skilled artist Ali’s work draws deeply from folklore, snippets of superstition, and the kinds of stories that travel quietly through families and communities. She works with the timeless wisdom and warnings carried in these tales, tracing how we continue to circle around the same joys, losses, and lessons. The landscape around her Penzance studio is always present in her pieces — the pull of the sea, the stretch of the horizon, and the gentle rhythm of fields, trees, and streams. All of these elements weave into her narratives, giving her work a sense of place as well as a sense of inherited story.
