Ali Bassett, Studio 4, The Exchange, Penzance, Cornwall.
Painter, stitcher, maker of folktales, nature and memory and friend to Steven Seagull
What a pleasure it was to photograph Ali in her studio overlooking Penzance harbour. I always love stepping into other artists’ spaces, there’s something special about soaking up their materials, tools, inspirations and the atmosphere they create around themselves. Ali’s studio is full of all of that, and she happened to be in the middle of getting work ready for a gallery, which brought even more energy to the space. The composition, as is often the case, presented itself: beautiful window light and a little boost from one Profoto B1X head.
Super calm, originally creative and a technically skilled artist Ali’s work draws deeply from folklore, snippets of superstition, and the kinds of stories that travel quietly through families and communities. She works with the timeless wisdom and warnings carried in these tales, tracing how we continue to circle around the same joys, losses, and lessons. The landscape around her Penzance studio is always present in her pieces — the pull of the sea, the stretch of the horizon, and the gentle rhythm of fields, trees, and streams. All of these elements weave into her narratives, giving her work a sense of place as well as a sense of inherited story.
