📸 A Photography Course for Wellbeing
A gentle, creative space in St Helens to slow down, reconnect, and breathe
If you’re looking for something that supports your wellbeing as much as your creativity, I’m opening a Monday evening photography course at my studio in St Helens — designed not just to teach photography, but to help people feel calmer, more connected, and more grounded.
Each week, we’ll explore a new theme, with a simple task to help you notice the world differently. No pressure, no competition — just a relaxed group, a warm studio, and space to learn at your own pace.
How Photography Supports Mental Health
Photography is more than a hobby — it’s a proven wellbeing tool.
Mindful attention — Research from the University of California shows that creative focus helps reduce stress by slowing the mind and encouraging presence.
Daily creativity — A study in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that small creative acts boost mood and overall life satisfaction.
Connection with others — Group creative activities reduce loneliness and build confidence through shared experiences.
Self‑expression — Photography offers a safe way to express emotions and reflect on personal stories.
This course is built around those principles — a calm, friendly environment where creativity becomes a form of self‑care.
What You’ll Experience
Weekly in‑studio sessions focused on creativity and wellbeing
Hands‑on demonstrations to build confidence with your camera
A gentle weekly task to encourage mindful noticing
Supportive feedback in a relaxed, non‑judgemental space
A chance to meet new people and feel part of a creative community
As your tutor, I’m Dave Lawson. Alongside navigating my own life challenges, including PTSD, I’ve built a strong foundation in both education and photography. I hold a PGCHE in education, professional photography qualifications including BTEC, and I’m a proud LRPS member of the Royal Photographic Society.
My goal is simple: to guide you with patience, clarity, and real-world experience — and to help you finally step out of auto mode so you can take control of your camera with confidence.
