An important reminder to be careful where you are stepping at this time of year. I was walking along the footpath and startled a female pheasant, which then flew past me and landed in the undergrowth behind me. I took a few more paces and glanced down to see this little bundle of fluff hiding in the grass next to the path. It would have been so easy to accidentally step on it (and it would be vulnerable to any loose dogs). Thankfully I saw from a distance that the mother returned to the chick so no harm done but it is a reminder to be very careful for chicks and ground nesting birds at the moment.

Seeing my first green hairstreak butterfly of the year is one of those little milestones that tells me summer is just around the corner. I usually see them on a gorse bush so it was a nice extra splash of colour seeing a couple on a patch of sea pink/thrift last week.

Sea pink/thrift and painted lady butterflies. I’ve seen some wonderful things this week in the hot sunny weather and a real highlight at the moment is the huge number of painted lady butterflies in the hedgerows. The hedges at Newdowns Head are covered in clumps of sea pink/thrift and they are full of butterflies.

My brother recently moved house and it was a lovely surprise when we visited earlier in the month to see that he had House Martins building a nest under the eaves. House Martin pairs work together to build their nest using around a thousand pellets of mud, each carefully collected using their beaks. It was wonderful watching them darting around the garden and gradually building their nest. House Martin numbers have decreased over the years and they were recently added to the UK Red List of Conservation Concern.

A roe deer in a woodland glade full of bluebells. I was quietly walking along a path in the woods when I saw a beautiful patch of bluebells through a gap in the trees. I was then treated to a glimpse of this lovely deer slowly walking through the flowers. Another wonderful moment of natural beauty that I felt so lucky to have experienced.

Beautiful Trevellas Porth from the top of Blue Hills. We always used to play in the rock pools as children, with colourful seaweed and various wildlife. During very low tides there is golden sand beyond the pools. It was a very quiet beach back then but is much busier now. Given how stunning it looks this is not surprising!

Photographing a cuckoo can be extremely challenging so I am delighted to have got this photo yesterday. They are shy and wary of people and although it is often easy to hear them it is a lot harder to find them to get a photo. Years of tracking them and learning their favourite spots has finally paid off!

The sunset last night was rather lovely. This is a view of the South Crofty headgear taken from Tesco’s car park. It would have been nice to have my proper camera with me but the phone camera didn’t do too badly!

A Wheatear on the cliffs at St. Agnes Head. I always look out for this pretty little bird at this time of year. Wheatears overwinter in Africa and embark on an epic migration to the UK each spring. I spotted a couple on the cliffs at the weekend so it is lovely to see them back.
