One of my most memorable sessions was with a client who had high expectations for their headshot but was unsure about how they’d look.

I gave them the freedom to experiment with different poses, expressions, and even clothing choices.

The patience I showed, coupled with my flexibility to adapt to their needs, allowed them to relax into the process.

Their confidence grew as they realized they didn’t have to ‘perform’—they just had to be.

I once worked with a client who was nervous about being on camera, convinced they needed to do something special to make the photos great.

I showed them how simple it could be—by just breathing, relaxing, and letting the session flow naturally.

In the end, their photo was effortless and bright, capturing the lightness they’d been carrying all along.

The lesson I learned was this: a breezy, relaxed approach brings out the best in people.

REMINDER: Just because you can do something doesn't mean you have to.

For me?

This means removing the professional mask I wore for years behind my camera—the one that had me saying yes to every client request, working evenings and weekends, and editing until 3 AM to meet impossible deadlines.

For so long I have hidden behind my camera, capturing everyone else's authentic moments while keeping my own professional boundaries blurry. I've rescheduled family time to accommodate last-minute shoots, taken on projects that weren't aligned with my vision, and undercharged for my expertise because I felt I "should" be grateful for any opportunity.

But now I know that just because I can do that, doesn't mean I should, or that I have to.

Photography isn't just about technical skill—it's about seeing people as they truly are. Ironically, I couldn't fully do that until I removed my own mask and started honoring my boundaries.

The result?

Not only am I more present in my own life, but the images I create have more depth and authenticity because I'm shooting from a place of creative energy rather than obligation.

One of the things I pride myself on is making my clients feel comfortable and at ease during their sessions.

Take Julia, for example. She came in thinking she needed to put on a ‘serious’ face for her professional headshot, but I encouraged her to be her true self—light, bright, and easygoing.

As soon as she relaxed, the image clicked: a natural, breezy smile that was a perfect reflection of her personality.

It was a reminder that the best photos happen when the process is simple, easy, and full of ease.
