Seal pups can look very different to one another.

They're born white and fluffy, before turning grey as they mature and moult their downy fur. This white down fur prevents them from being able to survive, initially, in the water out at sea.

This is why seals come to land to give birth and raise their pups, eventually heading out to sea and leaving the pup to moult it's fluffy, downy fur and grow fur that allows it to swim effortlessly at sea.

Sadly, winter storms and tidal surges can be a big danger to seal pups, if they happen to get swept out to sea in the tidal surge before they have developed their fur to allow them to survive at sea.

In 2023, Donna Nook Nature Reserve, in Lincolnshire, saw 2,207 seal pups born - a near record year of seal pup births.

When you feel the need for a post-Christmas nap 🦭😴

The shape of seals and their fat reserves allow them to sleep in some, let's say, unique positions while looking quite comfy in the process.

RATS πŸ€

Rats are a popular pet now, alongside other rodents such as rabbits, hamsters and Guinea pigs.

Despite their reputation, they are actually one of the cleanest animals but have been labelled with a long-time misconception. Being so intelligent, they are able to learn and adapt to new habitats and environments, leading to being one of the most widespread animals in urban and rural environments; and a key part of the ecosystem for predators.

Quiet and misty on my walk today but so many colours in autumn πŸ‚

Following a false autumn in summer during the extreme heatwave and the warmer than usual autumn, there are likely to be confusing effects to plants and animals preparing for winter and next spring, such as bluebells and snowdrops, hedgehogs and badgers, and migratory birds.

My tomato plants have even had a second lease of life! πŸ…

Celebrate the chubby unicorns! 🦏

It was recently World Rhino Day. A day to appreciate these iconic beasts. There are 5 subspecies of Rhino; 3 in Asia and 2 in Africa, according to the IUCN Red List.

Asia
🦏 Sumatran rhino are listed as Critically Endangered, with populations decreasing and as few as 30 rhinos left β¬‡οΈπŸ”»
🦏 Javan rhino are also listed as Critically Endangered but has a stable population, despite just 18 rhinos estimated to left β†”οΈπŸŸ
🦏 Greater one-horned rhino, instead, has a reported increasing population with around 2,100-2,200 rhinos left and is listed as Vulnerable β¬†οΈπŸŸ’

Africa
🦏 Black rhino are listed as Critically Endangered with an estimated 3,142 rhinos left, despite an increasing population β¬†οΈπŸŸ’
🦏 White rhino are listed as Near Threatened and are more common with 10,080 rhinos left, despite their population decreasing β¬‡οΈπŸ”»

πŸ’‘ Did you know?
A way to tell the difference between black rhino and white rhino, apart from white rhino being larger in size, is that the black rhino has a pointed upper lip, whereas the white rhino has a flat upper lip.

Although the population of each rhino varies across the world, they all face several common threats, including:
❌️ Hunting and poaching for their ivory to supply traditional Asian medicine markets and trophy hunters
❌️ Habitat loss from human developments (roads, dams, logging, agriculture)
❌️ Climate change leading to extreme, more intense and longer lasting droughts and floods
❌️ Civil unrest
❌️ Intensive and excessive tourism
❌️ Natural events (volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis etc)

Poaching is a constant threat and an ugly sight, with rhino horn worth more than its weight in gold. Made of keratin, the same material as human finger nails and hair, it has no scientific medicinal evidence. Despite this, traditional medicine continues to hold beliefs and claims of medicinal properties ranging from curing illness and disease to being an aphrodisiac.

Organisations such as Save the Rhino, Dogs4Wildlife and many others, are working tirelessly to reduce the threats to rhinos, including:
βœ…οΈ Educating local communities and traditional believers of the true medicinal property of rhino horn
βœ…οΈ Improving community wealth and income
βœ…οΈ Raising awareness of the importance of rhino
βœ…οΈ Anti-poaching patrols
βœ…οΈ Scientific and technological advances in tracking rhino horn
βœ…οΈ Dehorning rhino to remove their financial worth but protect their lives
