It’s a family business, with my husband being a chef and the creative force. I love working with people, and serving customers, and working in the local community.

The Cheese Room is one of my favourite places to meet friends or take the kids for their amazing hot chocolates! They have a cosy downstairs section in the Deli cafe and the pumpkin spice latte is my go-to at the moment!

What services or products do you offer?
Hand-illustrated and painted plastic jewellery and art

What motivated you to start your business and how did you get the idea or concept?
After studying Fine Art at University, I returned to Medway and needed a creative outlet to keep that side of my brain ticking while trying to figure out how to pursue a creative career. It originally started as making wearable illustrated pieces for myself and fun Thomas Waghorn Christmas cards for friends, then it quickly developed as I shared my work online. I loved drawing up things that were a bit quirky and unusual - not things you would typically expect to be worn as a fashion accessory. I opened an Etsy shop and suddenly I was selling my weird handmade jewellery and more to people all over the world.

What three words would you use to describe your business?
Playful, vibrant and quirky

What do you enjoy most about what you do?
The door it has opened to connecting with other local artists and creatives. Medway is full of so many talented and interesting people, and the conversations to collaboration opportunities are all really motivating and inspiring.
I am lucky to work part-time with Nucleus Arts, so being able to help with exhibitions, community projects and of course Medway Art Box with Rachel from iPrintedThat means there's always something creative to connect with.

What's your favourite piece of advice?
Never stop learning and evolving.

What makes you smile?
The colour pink!

'Delicious, special, yummy'

David Mendes - Cakeman Bakery

What services or products do you offer?
We offer excellent coffee, fresh baked treats, cakes, birthday cakes and sandwiches out of this world.

What motivated you to start your business and how did you get the idea or concept?
I always wanted to own a bakery. Two and a half years ago I decided to test the water and approached Chuck & Blade owners, David and Alex, with the idea of a weekly popup. Every Saturday I set up a table with cakes and baked treats I prepared at home. It too a bit of time but I became “the Cake Man of Rochester”.
When Chuck & Blade moved to a new location in the high street it felt right to set up the bakery.

What three words would you use to describe your business?
Delicious, special, yummy

What do you enjoy most about what you do?
Watching people do a jig when they are about to bite into a cinnamon bun.

What's your favourite piece of advice?
Be persistent.

What makes you smile?
My two amazing boys, when they are asleep lol

Rachel Moore - iPrintedThat

What services or products do you offer?
Printmaking workshops - screen printing, linocut, monotypes, cyanotypes.

What motivated you to start your business and how did you get the idea or concept?
I trained to be an accountant - by accident, really - I was months away from getting letters after my name when I woke up and realised; I can’t do this for the rest of my life.

Thankfully I had a really cool boss who suggested I take another role in the practice, go part time and find out what I really wanted to do with my life.

In truth, it had always been art, or at least something in that sector, so I took some courses at my local adult education college and fell in love with screen printing. I’d also had in the back of my mind that I’d like to be a teacher and immediately saw how screen printing would appeal to children - the excitement of pulling a print and lifting the screen for a big reveal. After running a few t-shirt printing workshops during the summer holidays for children of friends and family they suggested I do it as a business. It wasn’t long before mums and dads were asking to have a go themselves and the idea for iPrintedThat was born.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?
It doesn’t matter how many prints you do, the reveal NEVER gets boring. It might not always go right but it’s never boring.

What's your favourite piece of advice?
It’s not really advice, more of an observation about being self employed. The same boss mentioned above waved me off with these words; “The highs are high and the lows are low.” And it’s so true but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
