I well remember the summer of 1976 when nearly every night I sat in my hide above Wardle photographing Little Owls and only packed up when the local church clock chimed for mid-night. This year it has been the Barn Owls that have done well with their young now hunting for themselves. Wrens and Wood Pigeons are still breeding but it won't be long now before the summer of 2026 will just be another memory. How many more hot summers are on their way?

With this years early summer weather our garden Honeysuckle is now bearing fruit and this week has attracted two special birds. Firstly our local Bullfinches have paid it a visit and then, better still, the first female Blackcap that I have ever seen in the garden. Our bedroom window worked as a perfect hide from which to film their feeding antics.

One of my favourite birds to film on Islay is the Black Guillemot. They are found all around the Islay coastline and while I was filming them the other week a Gannet plunged into the sea and gave me the opportunity of another classic sea-bird photo.

This years visit to Islay marks fifty years of my continuous study of Islays Hen Harriers by way of close_up filming from my hides. It has been a remarkable privilege to have been licensed by the Government to spend over a thousand hours watching one of the United Kingdoms most threatened birds. It is now up to me to summarise all those observations in a report that helps the Harrier to survive its many present and future threats. It is going to be some task!!

A visit to Islay is never complete without filming the Corncrake. Some years they never show themselves but last weeks corncrake was close to a caravan park and showed no fear of human activity. Sadly, the once flower rich meadows that supported over a hundred calling Corncrakes have now largely been replaced by crops of Barley for the distilleries resulting in less than twenty birds being present this year.

In the high Pennines now is the time for our most exciting Owls to be out looking for Voles to feed to their young. The last couple of weeks have provided me with exciting opportunities at dusk and dawn. Patience is definitely a virtue!

Despite having filmed birds for more than 60 years I have only filmed Nuthatches at their nest on four previous occasions. It was a delight therefore to spend time with a local pair, especially as I was sat amongst a carpet of Bluebells, awaiting their visits at ten minute intervals. The joys of Spring!

The last week of showery weather has been good news for the Kingfishers and their first brood has now successfully fledged. With their nesting hole dug less than three feet above the water level of the stream they are vulnerable to flash flooding and drowning. Will they have continued good luck with their second and possibly third broods? only time will tell but I wish them every success!
