The Bentley Boys were back, 25 years ago. โช

In 1930, Bentley won their fifth Hours in only the event's eighth running, doing so with a confident 1-2; months later, the Great Depression saw the works racing team disbanded and the company itself collapse into receivership. ๐Ÿ“‰ The marque returned to Le Mans in 2001 after a 71 year absence with the Bentley EXP Speed 8 in a two car effort, and though the number 7 of Martin Brundle, Stรฉphane Ortelli and Guy Smith suffered a race ending fire, the number 8 finished third overall. ๐Ÿฅ‰

Drivers Butch Leitzinger, Eric van de Poele and Andy Wallace took to the podium appropriately - in "Bentley Boys" style white suits, goggles and leather racing caps! ๐Ÿฅฝ

Six-wheeled supremacy, 50 years ago! ๐Ÿ›ž In its fourth race and fresh from a strong outing in Monaco, the Tyrrell P34 again shone at a tight and twisty track - this time, the banked half-airfield of Scandinavian Raceway at the Swedish Grand Prix. ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช

Niki Lauda qualified fifth with an old Ferrari engine and the Tyrrells were first and fourth, sandwiching a very happy Mario Andretti in his Lotus 77, and Chris Amon in an Ensign N176 on rails. Andretti's second on the grid became first when he jumped the start; he was penalised 60 seconds and later retired from the lead with engine failure. ๐Ÿฅ€ Amon easily held off champion Lauda until suspension collapse at halfway sent him plunging through catch fencing and into the turn one barriers - his second frighteningly big crash in recent races after rolling at Zolder. On appearing worryingly still in the cockpit, he later remarked, "I was sitting there sort of taking in the fact I was still alive." ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

History was thus made in Anderstorp: Jody Scheckter led Patrick Depailler to the ninth and last Tyrrell 1-2 - and the only one with twelve wheels! Niki Lauda was a fortunate third - his worst finish to date in 1976(!) in a gripless 312T2, but still a record-setting seventeenth consecutive top ten finish - and James Hunt was a quiet fifth, finally scoring points again. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Elsewhere, more disasters for Fittipaldi - they removed the front anti-roll bar to combat handling issues, which made the FD04 burn through its front tyres so fast they opted to retire after ten laps. ๐Ÿซฃ Sweden's Gunnar Nilsson crashed out on lap three right in front of boss Colin Chapman, and Ronnie Peterson just missed out on a point in 7th. ๐Ÿค

An endurance race?! ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ At just over four hours, the 2011 still holds the record for longest F1 race in history - after a two hour red flag for rain, On This Day fifteen years ago. ๐Ÿšฉ

In one of the most chaotic races of the decade, McLaren's Jenson Button went from a drive-through for speeding under the safety car and a clumsy collision with team-mate Lewis Hamilton to a pulse-pounding final ten laps chasing down race leader Sebastian Vettel - and passing the Red Bull when Vettel ran wide on the final lap! Arguably Button's greatest F1 win, amidst record-breaking chaos. ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

It's another Race Week! ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ Catalonia has held Grands Prix in stints going back over a century, with the region's first Spanish Grand Prix appearing at the fearsome banked oval of Sitges-Terramar in 1923. The Spanish GP travelled to the streets of Pedralbes and Montjuรฏc before settling at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in 1991, which this weekend hosts the inaugural Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Here are some of our favourite Catalan captures ๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’›

Born 110 years ago: Doreen Evans, who began racing at Brooklands Museum at just 17. ๐Ÿ‘ง

Born into a motoring family in 1916, she rose to prominence alongside a groundswell of female racing drivers in the 1930s and raced MGs to class and outright wins. Her success was not limited to Brooklands, either; she was the first woman to race at Donington Park, took the Ladies' Record at Shelsley Walsh and a class win in the RAC Rally, and was part of a team of six women who raced, and finished, at Hours - all in the same year! ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ

Famously, during the 1936 International Trophy, her class leading MG caught fire exiting the Home Banking - quite unfazed, she slowed the car enough to leap out before it crashed, sustaining only minor burns. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

The beginning of a superlative dynasty, 30 years ago. ๐Ÿ‘‘

The 1996 was miserably wet, and two-time world champion Michael Schumacher was in his seventh race for a Scuderia Ferrari in rebuilding mode after years of poor reliability and outdated engines - and fresh off the back of a self-induced lap one exit in slippery conditions at Monaco. ๐Ÿซฃ

A clutch issue dropped Schumacher back from third on the grid to sixth at the end of lap one, and the ensuing race was filled with cars pirouetting in the Catalonian rain - championship leader Damon Hill had no grip in a Williams FW18 not set up for wet conditions, and his third spin in twelve laps sent him into the wall...almost as the recovering Schumacher took the lead from Williams' Jacques Villeneuve! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

In one of the drives of his career, Schumacher charged into the distance, often lapping five seconds faster than the rest of the field in the unloved Ferrari F310 to finish 45 seconds in front of second-placed Benetton driver Jean Alesi. It was the first of a staggering 72 race wins for the Schumacher-Ferrari partnership, who together would clinch the Scuderia's first world championship in 21 years in 2000. ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น
