I arrived at Penmon point, Isle of Anglesey, at 0100 on Thursday night (25-06-2026), passing about 100 cars leaving the area, so I figured I’d missed the bioluminescent show. The point was rammed with cars, campers and people, but there was a great vibe, a calm festival feel…in the darkness.

I sat and watched for a couple of hours, enjoying the calm morning in the unbelievable 29°C warmth. But to the south an electric storm was building, distracting, teasing me…
I relented on the plankton at 0300 and headed West to Holyhead, probably about 30 minutes too late. I watched an amazing spectacle of light as I travelled across Anglesey to my favoured spot and I managed to capture a few strikes as the charged sky hastened its departure to the North and onward to the Irish Sea.

It was fabulous to see this beauty at South Stack Cliffs RSPB Reserve yesterday. It was grey and overcast but a little cooler than last week.
We were treated to lots of appearances from this stunning Woodchat Shrike (Lanius senator).
It even caught a bumblebee right in front of us, although I was too slow to catch the moment, it was superb to witness. Incredible speed.❤️

‘Winking Buzzard’

Whilst on the way to search for a visiting spoonbill (I didn’t find) this Common Buzzard hovered above me at the car park and I swear he winked at me with his nictitating membrane as he gave me the photo opportunity…

…reminding me, although common, they are a very beautiful bird.❤️

I gave the Canon R5 a workout on a sunset evening with the swallows. It was so beautiful the old boy even came along to keep an eye on me. I enjoyed the camera, ‘Bryn’ enjoyed the stroll.❤️

It was very brisk, grey and gloomy afternoon but it was worth a little trip to Cors Ddyga nature reserve to see if the Marsh Harriers had returned from Africa and to hopefully catch a glimpse of the stunning male.
Just as we were heading back to the car park I saw a raptor-like silhouette heading towards us from the North marshes. Some very lucky timing had us enjoy a low flypast and a short hunt from this male before it continued on South. A magical moment…❤️

Birds in the Environment: COMMENDED

'Gentoo Penguins nest in colonies on high ground some distance inland, away from predators. They come ashore onto a beach, navigating using both underwater features and landmarks along the shore, where they dry off before returning to the nest. On occasion they fail to find the correct landing point, leaving themselves quite a walk back to the pathways leading to the colony. These three penguins did not seem to mind the walk, however!'

150mm; 1/2,000s; f/6.3; ISO 200.
