Lockheed C5M Galaxy 85-0004 operating RCH188 into Europe this morning. Based at Dover AFB of the 436 MAW.

The C-5M Super Galaxy is a strategic transport aircraft and is the largest aircraft in the Air Force inventory. Its primary mission is to transport cargo and personnel for the Department of Defense. The C-5M is a modernized version of the legacy C-5 designed and manufactured by Lockheed Martin. The USAF currently have 52 of these on their fleet this example was delivered in Nov 2013.

Another return visitor to Heathrow during the Covid-19 has been CargoLogicAir. They have been using their B747-400's on cargo runs between London and Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

15th April 2020 saw the first visit of a China Southern A380-841 B-8136 into Heathrow operating service CZ303.

Since then an A380 has arrived every Wednesday and it looks to depart on the following Thursday or Friday. I assume that these aircraft are being used to transport freight from China to the UK. So far 3 of the 5 in service with China Southern have been used.

Taken on the day just before UK lockdown...it's been a fascinating time recently with so many unusual visitors to Heathrow which I will showcase here.

Its unlikely we will see this type operating for Virgin Atlantic in the future as the 747 has very much fallen out of favour following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The last surviving example in the world of a Fairey Albacore (aka the Applecore) built from N4389/4M and N4172 recovered from crash sites. (Apr 1st 1941)

The Albacore was a single engined, carrier-bourne, biplane torpedo bomber which operated between 1939 and 1943 for the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm. Conceived as a replacement to the Fairey Swordfish, it served alongside it and was retired long before it, being replaced in 1944 by the Fairey Barracuda and Grumman Avenger.

800 were built at the Hayes factory and test flown at the Harmondsworth Aerodrome and it was first flown 12th Dec 1938. Early examples were fitted with the Bristol Ta**us II but later received the more powerful Ta**us XII.

The Supermarine Type 510 was, to all intents and purposes, a Supermarine Attacker fitted with a thin swept wing and tailplane.

The Type 510 was designed against Specification E.1/46 as an experimental aircraft suitable for investigating the high subsonic regime. The design retained both the 5,100 lb Nene engine of the Attacker, and its tailwheel undercarriage.

The prototype Type 510 (VV106) was flown for the first time on 29th December 1948 and became the first swept wing type to land on an aircraft carrier in November 1950. As it was not equipped for catapult launching, take-off was effected using rocket assisted take-off gear (RATOG).

Virgin Atlantic is receiving four new A350-1000 aircraft this year, followed by a further eight by 2021. These new deliveries are replacing the airline’s B747-400 aircraft, and initially will be on the New York JFK route, with other routes gradually being introduced including Los Angeles.

The aircraft will be G-VLUX (Red Velvet), joined by G-VPOP (Mamma Mia) and G-VJAM (Queen of Hearts), followed by Oscar on G-VPRD (Rain Bow).

Here G-VPOP is pictured on approach to Heathrow runway 09 on the last day of October.

Gulf Air Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, A9C-FG (c/n 39986), has been painted in a retro livery similar to that worn by the carrier’s Vickers VC10s, Lockheed L-1011 TriStars and Boeing 767s. Adorning the twin-aisle jet’s rear fuselage are markings celebrating the airline’s 70th anniversary and promoting the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Wednesday 29th March 1972, Hawker Siddeley’s Chief Test Pilot, Duncan Simpson OBE, landed Hurricane PZ865 at RAF Coltishall behind a Lightning jet fighter of the Station’s Operational Conversion Unit. He taxied to the aircraft servicing pan, adjacent to the BBMF hangar, and shut down. He was not expected and nor was the fact that he was delivering this precious, company-owned artefact of the nation’s aviation heritage into the hands of the RAF’s Memorial Flight.

Since being built at the Hawker factory at Langley, near Slough, and rolled out in July 1944, Hurricane Mk IIC PZ865 – ‘The Last of the Many’ – had been retained, maintained and flown by the company. In 1972, a combination of limited resources and restricted hangar space at Dunsfold led to Hawker Siddeley deciding that the company’s collection of historic aircraft could no longer be sustained. The company’s managing director, Sir John Lidbury, had promised all of Hawker’s historic aircraft to the fledgling Royal Air Force Museum as static exhibits. Hurricane PZ865’s future as a ‘flyer’ had suddenly become very uncertain indeed.

Duncan Simpson strongly believed that PZ865 should be kept flying and he started some astute ‘behind the scenes’ manoeuvring to ensure this happened. Having gained just sufficient permission to deliver the Hurricane to the BBMF, and before anyone could change their minds, he flew the aircraft that same day to Coltishall, the Flight’s home base at the time.

According to his own telling of the story, when he had taxied in and shut down by the BBMF hangar he was met by a Flight Sergeant who said, “Afternoon Sir, what have we here?” Duncan replied, “It’s a Hurricane Flight Sergeant – a very special Hurricane – and I’m handing it over to you. Look after it and make sure it’s flying right into the future so that future generations can see it”.

Of course, that is exactly what has happened and, 45 years after being gifted to the BBMF, the Flight still maintains PZ865 on its strength in airworthy condition. Here is PZ865 wearing its current South East Asia Command, 34 Squadron colour scheme at the recent White Waltham Members Day 2019.
