Annual auction.

Reading Camera Club held its annual Auction on Friday 9th February, raising money for club funds. Our Treasurer again became Auctioneer for the evening and entertained club members whilst gently persuading them to part with their money for a very varied collection of items contributed by members of the club. Lenses, tripods, photography books and studio lighting were all on offer as well as some vintage photography kit, of more historical interest, such as rangefinders and film cameras. Over a ÂŁ100 was raised to boost our funds.

Our next meeting on Friday 16th February will be a talk from the well-known portrait photographer Emma Finch. Her presentation is titled “Portraits With Impact”. For a preview of the range and quality of Emma’s photography take a look at her website https://www.emmafinchphotography.co.uk/. Emma will be giving her presentation on Zoom, and you can either join the meeting on Zoom or come to our meeting at St Peter’s Church Hall, Earley, Reading RG6 1EY, where her talk will be shown. Non-members are very welcome at our meetings for a small session charge.

On Friday 17th, Reading Camera Club welcomed David Rutter FRPS to give us his entertaining and instructive presentation on his own approach to photography “The Work of David Rutter FRPS”.

The first half of the evening was a fascinating overview into the different genres which David is interested in, along with a good helping of his photography. David not only showed us a range of his creative and effective imagery, but also explained his thinking on what made his compositions work so well. He covered his work in street and architecture, along with still life. We learned how you can set up a studio shot of a breaking wine glass, how you can create a succesful RPS panel just using coloured card and even venturing into AI, how a popular shot taken by many photographers in the British museum can be cleaned up in one step using AI tools.

The second half of the evening was taken up with a presentation based around David’s portrait work. He guided us through how he sets up his lighting in the studio and uses post-processing to produce striking images of his models. He then led us though more creative post-processing, composing more abstract images from those basic portraits. David’s work, including some of the images he showed on the evening, can be seen on his website https://www.davidrutterphotography.com/.

Our next meeting, on the Friday 24th November, is our second PDI (Projected Digital Image) competition of the year. This will be a great opportunity to come along and see the quality and range of work being produced at the club so why not join us either in person at St Peter’s Church Hall, Earley or on Zoom.

Details of the club and its activities are (as always) available on our website at https://www.readingcameraclub.co.uk/.

Last Friday was the first Print Competition of the 2023-2024 season for Reading Camera Club. It was an open competition, so pictures on any theme could be entered. Members submit up to 3 prints for consideration by a judge from another local club. Judging for this competition was by Gladys Perrier LRPS visiting us from Bracknell, who began by looking through all the submitted prints, which were then placed on the viewing stand at the front of the Hall, and assessed by her individually giving comments which were perceptive and always encouraging. Each print was scored out of 20.

The overall standard was very high and three prints achieved the top score, all coincidentally in black and white. Prints are also shown on Zoom for the benefit of members and guests unable to get to the Hall on that evening. Competition evenings are always popular at the club and it’s a great way to get feedback on your own pictures from an experienced photographer and also to see what other club members are producing.

Next Friday’s we have a presentation by Darran Roper from Reading who will give his presentation - A Way of Photography. More information and lots of images can be found on his website https://darranroper.com/.

Many of the highest scoring images from previous competitions can be viewed on our website https://www.readingcameraclub.co.uk which also has details of the club and of future meetings.

On Friday 20th, Reading Camera Club welcomed Rod Sloane, who had travelled down from West London to present his lively and informative talk – How To Break Into Sports Photography - for us.
Rod shared with us a fascinating set of high quality images focussing on his main interest – cycling events. The aim of his photography, he said, is to convey the joy of competition.

Rod led us through the techniques which he uses to get great images of cycling events, both indoor and outdoor, including panning (which he convinced us is not as difficult as some people think) and how to make sure that you have the best background to maximise the impact of the shot. He concentrates on both the action and the emotion in his work.

Apart from technique, he also explained the importance of getting the correct accreditation to make sure that you are in the best position to photograph the action, and how to get that accreditation. He urged us to put our images on Instagram to get them seen by the widest audience.

Next week is our first print competition of the year. A great opportunity to come along and see the quality and range of work being produced at the club.
