Nine shots, one road — Shinfield Road, Whitley, Reading.
This stretch is officially a district centre, the southernmost in the borough, and it’s packed with history.
The name Whitley means ‘white wood or clearing’ and appears in the Domesday Book as Witelei, owned by a man called Theodoric the Goldsmith.
By the 1160s, Reading Abbey monks were running a deer park here, with produce collected at a long barn near the old Four Horseshoes pub.
The modern parade is newer than it looks — Big Bazaar at number 221 opened in 2024 in a unit that had been a mobility store, and before that a Premier convenience store.
The Sue Ryder at 205 is the largest in the Reading area.
And the Sportsman pub nearby has been serving since the 1800s.
A Victorian-era road that was once a quiet country lane, now a strip of Turkish barbers, tandooris, and pizza chains.
