We have lift off - A Mandarin duck (Aix galericulata) taking off. Sometimes you have to be ready for that moment. Btw, this is without pre-capture. Just after preening itself it stopped and pooped. Normally it is a tell tale sign of a bird taking off. I had my finger on the shutter and boom it took off. I got the perfect shot. I'm waiting for a firmware update to assign pre-capture to a dedicated button, which would be ideal in a scenario like this. Currently on my camera it is a menu option which I have to hand, but still 3 clicks away. Anyway this is how you did it the old way.

Flying red - A Red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) flying through the air to get to the other side. The native Red is now locally extinct in the South of England with the exception of a few pockets. They are known for the distinctive ear tufts, bright red/chestnut coats. Some tend to be dark tan and a few melanistic too. They live in nests called "dreys". They are crucial to woodlands and often a key species for dispersal of seeds. They can leap over 2 metres and can plunge down 10-12 metres to the ground to escape pine martens or birds of prey. A beautiful rodent. No wonder, it is one of the most loved animals in Scotland.

On the prowl - A beautiful Leopardess called Esau on her evening walk. She was looking hungry and definitely scanning the riverbed for a potential meal. We had her company for a good 45 mins as she sat under a bush on the far side of the sand dune, then walked through the riverbed, crossed the dirt road and then walked up on the other side of the calcite dune. We had her in beautiful golden light as the sun was setting albeit the light was still very strong and she was walking straight into it.

Posing nicely - A Tree frog from the Mindo Cloud forest of Ecuador. I'm struggling to id this one but think it is Hyla sp. If there is someone who can id it accurately please comment. This is another reason why I would love to return back to the Mindo Cloud forest because I didn't do it justice. Especially when it comes to Amphibians and some macro work. I'm planning a trip next year. If you are interested in joining my please DM me. One of the best places to photograph birds, amphibians and reptiles of the Andes.

Serpent hunter - The Crested serpent eagle (Spilornis cheela) is a medium-sized bird of prey that is found in forested habitats across tropical Asia. Within its widespread range across the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and East Asia there are several subspecies. They have a large looking head with long feathers on the back of the head giving them a maned and crested appearance. The face is bare and yellow joining up with the ceres while the powerful feet are unfeathered and heavily scaled. The crested serpent eagle is a reptile eater which hunts over forests, often close to wet grassland, for snakes and lizards. It has also been observed to prey on birds, large insects like grasshoppers or locusts, amphibians, mammals, fishes, termites and large earthworms. A stunning raptor.

Naturally elegant - The Chestnut-naped antpitta (Grallaria nuchalis) is a species of bird in the family Grallariidae. It is found in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. They are naturally elegant and the postures they hold remind you how you train soldiers to stand straight in attention or a model on a catwalk👌🏻🤣. You often get them with their legs crossed as well. Grallaria antpittas are a "wonderful group of plump and round antbirds whose feathers are often fluffed up...they have stout bills [and] very short tails". Adults of the nominate subspecies have a dark chestnut crown and a rufous-chestnut hindcrown, nape, and face. They have gray lores and a patch of bare white skin behind the eye. Their upperparts and tail are brown. They prefer altitudes of 2000-3000 mts and mostly found on the ground on the edges of montane forests.

Master of grass - The Capybara or greater capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is the largest living rodent, native to South America. It is a member of the genus Hydrochoerus. Its close relatives include guinea pigs and rock cavies, and it is more distantly related to the agouti, the chinchilla, and the nutria. The word capybara means "master of the grass" and its scientific name, Hydrochoerus, means "water hog" because of its love for water. But the most interesting thing is it is neither. Capybaras are semiaquatic mammals found throughout all countries of South America except Chile. Capybaras are herbivore rodents, grazing mainly on grasses and aquatic plants, as well as fruit and tree bark.

Cloudforest beauty - A Grey-breasted mountain toucan (Andigena hypoglauca) high up in the Andean cloudforest. It is a species of bird in the toucan family, Ramphastidae. It is found in South American countries such as Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. In my humble opinion they are the prettiest of all toucans. There are toucans with plumage that is quite bog standard but stunning bills and vice-versa. Mountain toucans on the other hand have both; stunning plumage and colourful bills. This one is right up there along with the plate-billed toucan as one of the prettiest ones. I got a fantastic image of one against those low flying clouds in the Ecuadorian mindo Cloud forest which they call home on a wet murky day. Enjoy its sheer beauty and splendour.
