Brightening up my gallery for the weekend, with this lovely brown hare that was feeding and relaxing amongst the buttercups.

Still a lot of otter shots from great experiences on Mull, so here’s another. Although this one looks like this otter is looking at me, it was actually watching people behind walking further up on the loch shore. I was closer, but keeping quiet and well concealed in order not to disturb its behaviour, but took advantage of a moment where I could get a look toward the camera and it was pretty brief, before this individual determined the people further up the shore weren’t a threat and went on about its business.
Another closer crop for Instagram this time, so you can enjoy those awesome whiskers!

On your marks…!
One of my local hares I photographed on a test run with my new Sony 400mm f2.8 GM. The lens is as you’d hope (and really expect), incredible. Can’t wait to start getting more shots with it. I’m definitely set!
Had some fun with hares testing it as well, including a young pair of leverets that practically ran into me, checked me out from less than a couple of feet away and then launched off again… Lovely experience.

Double trouble! Wonderful moments on Mull with an otter family. I’ll often take shots like this, but not so often post them on Instagram… So here’s an uncropped and full frame image in this occasion for ‘World Otter Day’, because being square all the time is no fun!

European otters will mostly keep a low profile, either in the water, on a river bank or a shoreline. So quite often when they emerged from the water or appeared from behind a rock whilst on Mull, it was like this! They’re also extremely hard to spot if they’re having a snooze or a sunbathe, blending in extremely well with the wrack seaw**ds… They do love a stretch and yawn though, so always something to look out for.

Praying for fish…. definitely seemed to pay off for this otter!
I think my car and photography gear has just about been cleansed of the smell of wet and slimy seaw**d, but getting down low and lying in the rocks, w**d and pools for better perspective is definitely worth it for me. This otter was hunting just off shore and the haze of low cloud on the far bank of the loch blended well with the almost perfectly still water line and foreground from my low position, whilst exposing for the subject in turn allowed for an overall pleasing high key shot.
We hoped we’d have some good otter encounters on our trip to Mull, and we certainly did. Ten different individuals over 5 days, with some really special moments. Definitely a few more otter shots to come!

This handsome dog otter was the first one and I found during our trip to Mull, and we found him within 10 minutes of being out on the isle (lady luck definitely plays a part sometimes!). Scouting a promising area we accidentally spooked him from his sunbathing spot on a rock where we couldn’t see him, but it didn’t take him long to find another and quickly settle, where we tracked and found him sunbathing again a little further up the loch. The thing about heading out as soon as we arrived to scout was not being prepared in the right gear at all… And I got a very nice soaking from literally lying in a rock pool to get this perspective without any waterproof gear. Shooting low though allowed me to use a seaw**d laden rock to form a blurred foreground to where the otter was lying in sharp focus on another further behind. I really like how his whiskers are then highlighted drawing attention and it was also definitely worth getting wet for quality time well spent watching and photographing our first otter on Mull.

A little something in that beak!
Always amazing watching the hobbies chase and capture prey, their agility and turn of direction and speed is incredible. This can make them particularly challenging to shoot, especially close up. The aspect of this shot I like the most, in addition to the feather flare, is that the shot is pretty much full frame (though that’s not easy to show here and I went with square crop over the original aspect for Instagram in this instance to help with that somewhat). The Sony a1 made this achievable by continuing to track/lock focus even when the hobby disappeared behind the branches of a tree (where it caught this particular mayfly) and once it turned and came back toward me past the tree I could start capturing shots.

Foxy Lady...
A beautiful vixen Fox that I had the pleasure of watching and photographing locally at the end of the summer. The Cubs from this family will have left their natal area by now to try to find a suitable territory for themselves. Those that do not find a territory, generally die younger than territorial animals. This is becoming a problem for country and urban Foxes, as we pack them in tighter spaces with less free roaming. Indeed this is an issue that is unfortunately affecting much of our native wildlife...
