The Life Changing Treasures of Community
We were not designed to be alone.
Do you lack a sense of community in your life or family social groups? Do you often feel lonely and like you don’t belong? If so, you’re not alone. Many people struggle with finding a sense of community and connection in their lives. However, there are changes you can make to improve this aspect of your life.
Firstly, let’s define what community means. Community refers to a group of individuals who share common interests, values, or goals and come together to support and uplift one another. Belonging to a community means feeling accepted, understood, and valued by others who share similar experiences or perspectives. This is very different to having to conform to be part of a group to fit in. This is being accepted as you are and showing up as your true self.
Communities can exist in various forms and places. They can be found in your neighbourhood, workplace, school, church or faith groups, or even online platforms. The key is to identify where you feel most comfortable and where you can find people who share your interests or values.
Finding your community may require some exploration and effort. Start by identifying your interests and passions. What activities or causes do you feel strongly about? Once you have a clear idea, seek out groups or organisations that align with your interests. Attend events, join clubs, or participate in online forums related to your chosen community. By actively engaging with like-minded individuals, you increase your chances of finding a sense of belonging.
Social support plays a crucial role in fostering a sense of community. Surrounding yourself with supportive individuals who understand and empathise with your experiences can make a significant difference in your overall well-being. Seek out individuals who uplift and encourage you and reciprocate that support by being there for them as well.
Being part of the right community will enable you to see how others problem solve and work through difficulties. This enables you to learn compassion and have the right tools should you go through a similar challenge.
Growing your network is another important aspect of building a sense of community. Actively seek out opportunities to meet new people and expand your social circle. Attend networking events, join professional organisations, or volunteer for causes that resonate with you. By connecting with a diverse range of individuals, you open yourself up to new perspectives and experiences, further enriching your sense of community.
Interacting positively with your tribe is essential for maintaining a strong sense of community. Be respectful, kind, and supportive towards others. Engage in meaningful conversations, actively listen, and offer help when needed. By fostering positive relationships within your community, you create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone involved.
Prioritising self-care is crucial when it comes to building a sense of community. Taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being allows you to show up fully for yourself and others. Make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Practise self-reflection and self-compassion. By prioritising self-care, you become a healthier and more present member of your community.
Lastly, it’s important to combat the stigma surrounding loneliness and the feeling of not belonging. Many people struggle with these emotions, but it’s essential to remember that you are not alone. Reach out to others, share your experiences, and seek support when needed. By breaking the silence and normalising these feelings, we can create a more inclusive and understanding community for everyone. If you do go through Mental Health challenges, you will be more likely to reach out for support and help as you will not be so fearful of the stigma that still surrounds this illness.
In conclusion, if you lack a sense of community in your life or family social groups, it’s important to take action to change that. Identify your interests, seek out like-minded individuals, and actively engage with your chosen community. Surround yourself with supportive individuals, grow your network, and interact positively with others. Prioritise self-care and combat the stigma surrounding loneliness and not belonging. By implementing these changes, you can create a stronger sense of community and belonging in your life.
Once you have your tribe around you, start saying yes!
Staying in can feel very comfortable but even if you don’t feel like going out when you are invited, do go. Once you are out and socialising, you will be glad you accepted that invite!
