Photographer and artist Boris Zuliani in his studio in the countryside near Hoi An, Vietnam.

A total highlight and massively inspiring afternoon was this visit to meet Boris and Hugo in the purpose built space.

As I take steps into the world of Ultra Large Format photography this will be at the forefront. What Boris has built and creates needs to be seen to be believed and really takes photography into an experiential state.

I knew it would be special but I was not prepared for how I would feel walking into the auditorium to take my seat.

Last November Britain’s greatest living playwright Tom Stoppard passed away and last week a most beautiful, poignant and suitably erudite celebration of his life and work took place at the National Theatre.

I was hugely honoured and lucky enough to be invited along to join a star-studded audience filled with theatre, rock’n’roll and actual royalty - yes, Charles & Camilla were there alongside members of the Stones, Pink Floyd and Hollywood stars.

But that’s not the point. As the doors opened the crowds formed an orderly queue to enter the building. I got chatting to the Director of The London Library where Tom had been a member for several years. It dawned on me that every seat was occupied by someone who had their own special connection to Stoppard.

Mine started with a rather opportunistic and wistful leap of faith when I reached out to ask Sir Tom if he would be interested to sit for me to have his portrait taken backstage. It was 2010 and I was a stagehand at The Old Vic, hustling to make strides in my photography career.

Thankfully Tom was very obliging and liked the portrait so much he asked if he could use it for his own press and pr use. This was to be the first of several times we would collaborate - the most recent one being a matter of weeks before he passed last year.

The shot has remained one of my most favourite portraits I have made with someone and has, for me at least, stood the test of time as a very special shoot.

Back to last Thursday and the bells have been rung for people to take their seats for the Tom Stoppard Celebration. I entered the Olivier Theatre to find my seat in the stalls only to see the very same shot from our 2010 shoot staring back at me from every single seat in the auditorium - it had been chosen as the cover to the programme for this momentous occasion.

I was floored, completely taken aback and humbled.

I’m struggling to explain it but this has meant so so much to me and I am deeply honoured to have played a small part in his own story.

Goes to show what can happen if you just ask.

Inside Mot Met Studio, Da Nang, Vietnam

Finally getting around to posting about this visit to this dream set up and location that Boris has created in the countryside near Hoi An.

I couldn’t miss the opportunity to visit and spent the short hour that I was there mainly in awe of this natural light studio and home.

Aside from the huge ultra large format camera that Boris and Hugo have built they have everything ready to create stunning portraits shot on large format cameras and processed using wet plate collodion.

Boris designed and built the whole space to include a sweet mezzanine apartment out the back, as well as huge darkroom facilities downstairs. They need to be huge to process the 1m squared wet plates that the massive camera can produce.

Loved this time spent there and thoroughly recommend anyone visiting the area to try and visit. I am already trying to figure out a way back there and look forward to chatting again with these two analogue heroes!
