Long overdue update!

It's been a very busy few months, moving house, setting up a photography room for film development, but recently I had the great opportunity to resume shooting. This time it was another 1st Birthday Shoot, with a cake provided by and assistance provided by Capture Quintessence Photography

The shoot went very well and I am very happy with the resulting photographs. If you're interested in arranging a portrait photoshoot, please message on here or Instagram for availability, services and rates.

Recently I had the wonderful opportunity to do a second Cake Smash Birthday. The theme of the shoot was Unicorn and offered me and Cake Smash Cake Photography the chance to practice using new backgrounds, props and most uniquely, an all-vegan cake.

The unicorn used in these photos was an old rocking horse, restored to its fantastic current condition by the The Grey Shed, who specialises in furniture restoration (The Grey Shed was also responsible for the lovely pink tutu).

The shoot went very smoothly, despite a lot of frowning onthe part of the model and I was very pleased with how the background bokeh's effect looked on camera.

If you would like to see more work by Cake Smash Cake Photography and The Grey Shed, follow the links below, and if you are interested in a Cake Smash Birthday Shoot, or wish to capture your child's very first birthday, DM here or on instagram.

Thankyou and enjoy the photos.

Early this summer I had the great chance to develop portraits that were lit with speedlite flashguns, small electronic devices that are great for when you want to create dramatic lighting without requiring the use of heavy studio flash units.

Andrew, a DJ from Portsmoth wanted me to produce some headshots of him and his DJ friend Leon to be used in promotional details. The original plan was to shoot down on Southsea Seafront but the intense heat of the early evening and busy crowds really would have affected how long we could work and would have likely produced too many distracting elements. Luckily we had a back garden to use and like so many shoots, the atmosphere was very relaxing and gave me a chance to practice different flash settings and positions, using just a single speedlite, small tripod and bracket to hold the speedlite.

I am very thrilled to showcase the series of photos I produced for my first cakesmash photo shoot I did for a client, Ellie, and her babygirl Rosie. When Ellie approached me to take photos of Rosie in celebration of her 1st Birthday, it gave me a further opportunity to develop my brand style within an indoor situation.

My aim for the overall aesthetic was to create scenery that had very natural, soft and earthy colours, something that would not be seen as too gaudy or a product of its time.

For the cake I collaborated with Cake Smash Cakes Only (https://www.instagram.com/cakesmashcakesonly/) to produce a naked-style cake that fitted with the overall aesthetic of the shoot. As seen in the photos, I hope that future cakes are as lucky as this cake!

Overall the shoot was a very relaxed and professional experience for everyone involved, especially Rosie! I let her have free reign of the set which I think captured natural behaviour that really captured her personality.

If you or someone you know is interested in booking a cake-smash photoshoot, contact me either here or on Instagram for availability, as well as prices and packages.

For my fashion photography project at LIOP, I was inspired by the lurid technicolor hues of Powell and Pressburger’s Black Narcissus (1947) and The Red Shoes (1948), Dario Argento’s Suspiria (1977), and David Lynch’s Twin Peaks (1989). I also wanted to capture the emotions that are strong central themes at each of these films/television shows, and it was a challenge to get the model to express this when posing in a static manner.

The shoot itself was enjoyable but very exhausting, both as an assistant and as the main photographer, a feeling that an experienced fashion photographer present told me never disappears! The experience was rewarding as it gave me a chance to direct a team, work with coloured gels and produce starkly different shots in a single environment.

For my photography business, I wanted a logo centred around my use of analogue cameras, such as my Graflex Crown Graphic, a large format press camera built in 1969. While an old idea was to simply use the camera, I was recently inspired by two pieces of media I recently experienced, a 1920’s modernist poster for the Soviet documentary film ‘Man with a Movie Camera’ (Dir. Dziga Vertov) and the 2002 adventure game Syberia. Both featured logos fusing man and machine, and here I decided to create a silhouette of myself with my camera and tripod.

While it would have been easy to grab a piece of clip art off the internet, Capture Quintessence (who shot the photograph and footage) and I sought to create a silhouette in real life. So we headed down towards Castle Fields, Southsea, to photograph against the sky over the Solent, before adjusting the images in Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. The adjustments were quick to do and it was impressive how I could easily transform a clear image of myself into a definiable silhouette.

In my next post, I’ll be writing about the Fashion Photography course that I undertook at LIOP, my inspirations for my project and my experience in handling my first fashion shoot.

The pandemic has affected us all, some more than others and it was the loss of a family friend that led me to reflect on how memories of ourselves are preserved in today’s digital world, and how we want ourselves to be remembered after we passed on. So for my personal project at LIOP, I set out to capture family members and friends in a physical and digital way so that they could be remembered as they are, rather than a superficial facade. The images illustrated then are very natural in pose and expression. My inspiration for this style was primarily the German photographer, August Sander, who captured German society during the 1920s.

My primary cameras for this were my Graflex Crown Graphic large format camera, using medium-format film, and my Nikon D3200 DSLR, which was paired with a manual Nikkor 50mm lens from the 1980s.

One of my favourite aspects when it comes to photographing events such as birthdays or weddings is the chance to capture candid behaviour, utilising the principles of framing, retouching and lighting that I learnt at LIOP.
Candid photography can be an excellent genre of portrait photography as it captures the natural character of people in a way that is not contrived. Capturing this involves fast shooting, which for indoor situations can be challenging as low-lighting, distracting elements and constant movement can affect picture quality. For my Uncle’s 70th Birthday Party, I employed the use of a Yongnuo YN560 III Speedlite, a cheap but useful alternative to the Canon and Nikon speedlites along with a radio controller so that I could use the flash in any position. The results shown here really show how even using a budget DSLR and kit lens can achieve good results.
When it comes to creating portraits that remove distracting elements from the frame, I use Adobe Lightroom and its features to remove background objects that may distract the viewer's eyes from the desired subject.

If you like the results shown here and are interested, feel free to message me on here or Instagram.

This series of photos was taken for my Portrait Photography Course at London Institute of Photography (LIOP).

Our chosen model for the session was Alec King ( on Instagram), a young man who showcases his vitiligo in his modelling work. I chose Alec because of his striking appearance and felt that he would be a great subject for the style I was aiming for; to replicate the photographic style of the late 19th and early 20th century. In the early days of photography, photographs would not be sensitive to colours on the red end of the colour spectrum, meaning that skin tones were usually much darker, with freckles and blemishes more apparent. After I explained this to Alec, he was excited, commenting that I was going to ‘make his vitiligo pop!.

Shooting with Alec was very relaxing and his experience and ability to shift poses so quickly was a great help to a first timer like me.

Featured besides my final portrait photographs are the few inspirations that helped me choose my style and model:
Portrait of Rob Ryan - Rikard Österlund
Bernard Day on return from the Barrier, December 2nd 1911 - Herbert Ponting
Screenshot - Jack Clements (I used this one to illustrate to Alec what the effect of reducing the reds, oranges and yellows can have on a person’s skin, needless to say, he loved it!)
