The king’s perch 👑
Jess Perry Photography

We’ve been on the hunt for a local area that has a resident kingfisher for over a year now. Multiple hours of our evenings and weekends have been spent sitting quietly waiting for the flash of electric blue. We’ve had great luck finding various locations but not always so successful with kingfisher activity. We’ve both learnt that alertness and patience is so key for even a brief sighting of this elusive bird.

Last weekend we discovered a new spot along a local river. Everything felt so peaceful. Roe deer browsing just the other side of the river, two buzzards perching on a nearby tree and the reeds & marshland around us buzzing with smaller songbirds 🕊️

It didn’t take long before we had our first sighting.
What felt like hours was only a few minutes before the kingfisher had returned slightly upstream. The pure excitement we shared in this moment was incredible however we sat still, unsure at this time if our position had be compromised.

During this four hour stake-out we were incredibly lucky to have had one opportunity where this beautiful female kingfisher balanced perfectly on a reed overhanging the rivers edge.
This image certainly isn’t frame filling nor full of pin sharp details however it’s the best image to date we have captured of this charming bird!
