The initial plan was to go see I D L E S & Chalk in CHSq ... then there was an addition to the line up & my main aim became documenting the surreal experience with Aidan & GROWING PAINS. Growing Pains... (more about that in due course!)

So being on the GP crew list my media access only allowed me to cover their performance professionally (& rightly so, to give the pro music photographers space to do their thing...) however having my gear bag backstage opened up another opportunity - I've always been tempted to bring a personal camera with me but never risked it for fear of security deciding it was still too professional looking to bring in & having a mad dash to leave it somewhere - Wednesday was m6 chance to give it a go... (it's a wee FUJIFILM UK and Ireland x100v for the fellow camera nerds!)

Anyways there's a famous quote by photographer Robert Capa - “If your photos aren't good enough, you're not close enough.”... here's my attempts at getting close enough!!

I'm always hopeful my diary will be blank when I'm checking the date for a Guildhall & Bishop’s Gate Hotel Derry enquiry... especially one when the couples wants for their photography is exactly what I love to provide... which was very much the case with Mary & Stevie...

From the very first conversation I knew it was going to an ideal afternoon for my approach as they shared that the day was going to be 'our way, not the way others might expect.' and that they were both pretty laod back and so not suited to unnecessary fuss... which someone forgot to tell the busloads of tourists who congratulated them as we passed through an incidental guard of honour on the way out of the Guildhall & the other groups we passed on the walls!

Their afternoon was very much a family affair with the usual guest readers being joined by a guest with a fiddle providing their ceremony music & Mary's dad being the designated videographer for the day - albeit with three young apprentices who were keen to learn the ropes...

This is an overview of their day...

In a change from the scheduled programming here's a wee reminiscing post to say happy 9th anniversary to Grainne & Andy.... Bishop’s Gate Hotel Derry

Their wedding was quite early on in my 'wedding photography' career and was one that reinforced my love for taking a documentary approach by simply capturing what was happening without influencing it any more than was unavoidable...

Grainne & Andy's day was never going to be about doing what was deemed traditional or expected, rather it was going to all about them & their girls and wider family - an ideal day to document a wedding day at it really was, rather than ticking off a list of 'must-have' shots...

They were also only too aware how quickly their day was going to pass, so they wanted to make the absolute most of it by spending every moment they could with their guests while.creating memories that will have only become more poignant as time passes....

As aside it was the first time I'd shot at Bishops Gate (unsurprisingly now I think about it as it had only opened a few months previous)... it's interesting how certain venues attract certain types of couples, luckily for me there seems to be a correlation with those who fall for the charms of Bishops Gate, and those who want the natural & relaxed approach to wedding photography that I offer - it has become the venue I would return to most often over the years...

I'm always in two minds about sharing these types of posts - the sensible business practice seems to be to have a proper wedding/family photography only feed & a secondary one for other stuff... the justification I allow myself though is that I see myself as a people photographer rather than silo'ing into one practicular genre - so that includes people at events, people on wedding days & those I happen to pass on the streets...

So here my latest collection of 'incidental street photographs' - incidental in that I didn't set out strictly to make street photographs but rather was having an amazing break in London during the recent heatwave with my two talented teenagers (Growing Pains & ) and happened to make this shots as we made our way around the city... there's plenry of chances when you're clocking up 20/30,000 steps a day!!

I spent a lovely morning in the company of Suzanne, Jason and their brilliant kids, plus Penny their rescue dog... these are a wee sample of their photos, chosen specifically to respect the kids privacy...

Suzanne's a family photographer herself ( ) which adds an extra later to what I always consider the conpliment of being trusted with the job of capturing a.familys photos...

The brief was.very straightforward - document the families morning as it happens while they enjoyed a dry and, thankfully, somewhat milder day in their amazing Portrush back garden....

If you're interested in a similarly relaxed family photoshoot drop me a message...

The Wait....

Even with the most punctual bride there are always great documentary photo opportunities in the time prior to the ceremony... the big friendly hugs between folks who don't see each as often as the want... the kids who are already feeling a wee bit bored & wondering when the party they were promosed will start & the groom who's trying to convince himself as much as everyone else that he's not.starting to feel the nerves...

These are a collection of photos taken during the wait...

A few documentary weddong photos from over the past few years...

i find mornings are a great time for not only the bride & groom but also their family & friends to get used to the way I like to work; it's amazing to see how quickly folks adapt and realise they aren't going to be asked to stop & pose and can just get on with gettimg themselves ready for the day ahead....

It can also be a wee microcosm of the day with the mixture of nerves & excitement as the past few months of planning & emotion all comes together...

A few weekends ago I have the absolute pleasure of documenting three amazing events during the Festival...

Each was brilliant in it's own right, so it seems fair to post them separately....

These photos tell the story of the Mini Matsuri event, held amphitheatre (which is a class live music/event venue for anyone looking for somewhere a bit different - with the benefit of a roof!)

The event include an interactive performance with & as I love to do I have the privilege of just being able to roam to document events as they happened...

I think I've accidently become a gig photographer - or more accurately a Growing Pains gig photographer after capturing them for the sixth time yesterday; when they were performing on the bill of 's last ever gig by ...

Each & every one has been brilliant to see & great fun to document; it's also been great watching the band develop their own voice as they introduce their own songs into their set...

Here are a few of the photos - i'll leave them to share the music on their own page, where you'll also get details on upcoming gigs, their debut Is next up

Amy & Keane recently spent a few days in Derry while enjoying a tour of Ireland with along with their close friends - Pam, Paul. John. Ellen, Todd, and Christy....

Amy's birthday happened to fall while in town & so Abby at Savvy Travel got in touch with me to help them organise a group photoshoot.
On the day I meet them at the city hotel and despite the offer of their bus we decided to brave the typical Irish spring day & splash our way around the town taking in the sites, hiding from the heavier downpours & stopping along the way for some fairly informal photos... before stategically finishing up where they were booked in for lunch...

Here's a look at their morning...
