You don’t need more photos of your kids.

I’m guessing your camera roll is already full of them doing all the cute wee things you never want to forget.

But do you know who’s missing far too often?

You.

You, the one who holds everything together and is the designated memory keeper of the family.

And I know that it can feel easier to stay behind the camera, I’ve felt that. But one day, your children won’t just want to see what they looked like.

They’ll want to see you there, too.

So do yourself and your kids a favour, and stop being invisible in your family story.

Being an auntie of 5 is one of the greatest joys of my life 🥹

It’s also taught me plenty about kids.

I know when to bring the craic and high energy!

And I know when to give kids some space to explore and relax.

Just like this wee moment. Not asking her to perform, but just noticing what was already there.

If the thought of forcing your family to sit still, smile nicely and pretend nobody’s got sand in their socks makes you want to cancel before you’ve even booked… I’m here to tell you family photos can feel completely different.

How? Very simple.

Let the kids lead.

Let them explore, run about like mad eejits, climb the dunes, bury their toes in the sand, wander back for a wee cuddle, then disappear again two seconds later.

That’s where the good stuff is.

No pressure to behave perfectly. Just a bit of gentle direction from me, plenty of space for everyone to be themselves, and photos that actually feel like your family.

I’m sure you’ve heard people say that photos get more precious with time.

I know firsthand that this is true.

When my dad died 5 years ago, I found myself searching through every drawer, box and album, looking for photos of him.

And it broke my heart that there weren’t enough.

The photos that I did find became so precious.

That experience has changed how I approach photography.

I know how important these photos will be when somebody opens a drawer years from now, searching for proof of a love that mattered.

A mum crossing the same stream her family has crossed for generations, carrying her baby through farmland that has been in their family for over 200 years!

And that’s exactly why studio photos have never really been for me. I’d much rather photograph your family somewhere that actually means something to you. The field your granda farmed. The beach you’ve gone to every summer since you were wee. The places that already hold your stories before I even arrive with a camera.

One day he’ll look at this photo and see the way his mum looked at him.

And she’ll remember how perfectly he fit into her arms at this stage.

That’s why these photos matter.

Not because everything looked perfect.
Just because none of it stays the same for very long.

I was nervous to photograph this family.🥹

Because they’re both photographers and I was worried they might judge my camera! 🤣

But I needn’t have worried!

They were a dream to photograph. The kind of family who can just be together- no performing needed. Just music playing, dancing in the lounge, kids climbing into laps, and everyone completely comfortable in each other’s company.

Not to mention that their house is one of the coolest homes I’ve ever had the privilege of stepping into!

I am so happy to have preserved a little piece of their life for this family- their ordinary, beautiful life exactly as it is right now.

I first photographed Sienna before she had even reached earth side!!

Now, here we are at our third session together.🥰

And what a joy she has been since day one.

Watching little personalities unfold is one of my favourite parts of this work! Seeing the tiny newborn I once photographed now becoming curious, determined, always off exploring the world around her, before coming straight back in for the safety of Mum’s arms.

These are the moments that matter most to me to photograph.

Not perfect smiles or looking at the camera. Just the feeling of being loved, and knowing where you belong.

If your living room currently doubles as a dance floor, I’m obsessed already.

Before mums book a session, they often think they need:
🤔better outfits
🤔calmer children
🤔a tidier house
🤔a quieter season

But let’s face it, years from now, it won’t be those things you miss.

It’ll be this. The dancing in the living room. The way they reached for your hands. The noise. The movement.

The feeling of being right in the middle of it all.

Getting ready for Christmas with a bit of baking and sewing!

Just call me Martha Stewart 🤣

(Results may vary. Flour everywhere. Thread tangled. Still festive.)

Because life isn’t made up of the big, polished moments - it’s the wee in-between bits that make you smile.

Those are the moments I look for every week…
and the same ones I’m always watching for during your sessions too.
