Hall Russell United JFC vs Glentanar Juniors FC: my picks from a tense and entertaining game on Tuesday evening at Denmore park in the North of Scotland Football League Championship. With just two league games remaining, a draw or better would see the home side seal automatic promotion back to the Premier League. The game started quite evenly, with both teams having some good spells of possession. Glentanar looked hungry and it was clear to see they were trying to build from the back, invite the home side on and look to break quickly. This was looking promising and perhaps there were some nerves in the home side. However, the first goal went the way of Hall Russell, with a well placed shot into the bottom corner giving the goalkeeper no chance. This definitely settled the home side who started to gain control of the game and passed the ball well, showing more patience in their build up, working the ball wide to the pacey winger and it wasn’t long before the second goal came. A corner swung in and just missed the captain, before being put in by the player behind. Half time 2-0. The second half went much the same as the first half finished, with Hall Russell having good control of the ball, patient in their build up and managed the game well. Two further goals came, one from the penalty spot after one of those clumsy collisions that gives the ref a decision to make - looked a cheap one to concede but a penalty nonetheless. The fourth goal came shortly after with good strength from the striker to hold off the defender before tucking the ball home. The celebrations seemed more of relief at the end for the home side, who can now look forward to another season in the top flight! Credit to Glentanar who kept competing throughout the game and made for an entertaining match despite the scoreline.

Banchory Amateurs vs Cove Thistle AFC - The Jags - North of Scotland Cup final! A few action shots from Friday night’s cup final between Banchory and Cove at Balmoral stadium. A close first half with not much in it and few chances had the teams going in level at half time. Second half Banchory came out a different side and had the majority of the game. Midway through the second half they got the reward for their effort when their talented forward picked up the ball in the box and managed to hit the back of the net. As Cove kept trying to get themselves back into the game, Banchory limited them from any real chances and the killer second goal came when their midfielder ran onto a pass and slotted it past the goalkeeper to send the Banchory fans wild. A red card for a Cove player then followed which made the task even greater for Cove, who did manage to create a couple of chances before the end but couldn’t get themselves ball in and Banchory ran out 2-0 winners in the end!

Portletico FC vs White Cockade: A few action shots from Portletico vs White Cockade in the cup quarter final from the Sunday amateurs! A nice local one for me and a real back and forth game. The deadlock was broken in the second half where a good break from White Cockade saw the forward pole the ball home. It was quickly followed by a second to shock the home side, another good quick attack saw a rebound fall to the striker to tap in. Portletico got a goal back so quickly I missed it! I believe it was a free kick from out wide that evaded everyone and found its way into the back of the net. As time was running out, Portletico managed to get the equaliser and almost won it later on with a strike against the outside of the post. It was to finish 2-2 however and went straight to pens. Always a lottery at this stage but it was Portletico who came out on top with the winning penalty being fired into the bottom corner. An entertaining match between two teams keen to attack!

My first time back photographing junior level football since my return saw me back down at Stonehaven for a near top of the league clash between two strong teams in Stonehaven and Hermes, both in with a good chance of winning the North of Scotland Football League in what is looking to be a really tight finish to the season with several teams in with a chance at glory. Some good spells of possession for Hermes early on in the game, passing the ball well but not getting any clear cut chances out of a solid Stonehaven defence, it was Stonehaven who had the first half chance with a volley from a cross going over the bar. Probably a key turning point in the game came around the half hour mark, where one of the Hermes players picked up two yellow cards in quick succession - I didn't actually see this I only saw the coach getting a red card. It wasn't until chatting to fans at half time that I was informed there was also a player sent off - must have been doing my best Chris Kamara impression! Stonehaven used the extra man well from this point and began to get more control of the game, managing to score the crucial opener before half time, some good work on the wing and a good cross was finished on the volley really well by the Stonehaven forward, who managed to hold off the Hermes defender, stretch his leg round and fire into the bottom corner leaving the keeper with no chance. The second half continued in a similar fashion, Stonehaven working the ball into wide areas and attacking well from here but unable to create many clear openings. Hermes battled extremely well, having more than a fair share of the ball despite being down to 10 men, but between a strong Stonehaven defence and a few offside flags, just couldn't manage to create any great chances. The game ended 1-0 to Stonehaven in what could turn out to be a massive 3 points come the end of the season.

An entertaining Sunday morning saw me take in a competitive cup quarter final between CRFC and Stornoway Society (Holburn FC). A quick start from CRFC saw them head into a 2-0 lead and having not seen either team play before, I felt like we were in for a one sided tie. However, this kicked Stornoway into life and they fought their way back into the tie to level it at 2-2 and looked particularly dangerous on the counter attack. Goals were exchanged in the second half before CRFC scored a fourth a bit later on. The tie was then sealed as a late break away from CRFC resulted in a penalty being given away which was converted to make the final score 5-3 to CRFC. Two good sides who both looked to play some good football. May well need to take in the semi final if I can as I was impressed by the way CRFC tried to play!
