Hall Russell United JFC vs Glentanar Juniors FC: my picks from a tense and entertaining game on Tuesday evening at Denmore park in the North of Scotland Football League Championship. With just two league games remaining, a draw or better would see the home side seal automatic promotion back to the Premier League. The game started quite evenly, with both teams having some good spells of possession. Glentanar looked hungry and it was clear to see they were trying to build from the back, invite the home side on and look to break quickly. This was looking promising and perhaps there were some nerves in the home side. However, the first goal went the way of Hall Russell, with a well placed shot into the bottom corner giving the goalkeeper no chance. This definitely settled the home side who started to gain control of the game and passed the ball well, showing more patience in their build up, working the ball wide to the pacey winger and it wasn’t long before the second goal came. A corner swung in and just missed the captain, before being put in by the player behind. Half time 2-0. The second half went much the same as the first half finished, with Hall Russell having good control of the ball, patient in their build up and managed the game well. Two further goals came, one from the penalty spot after one of those clumsy collisions that gives the ref a decision to make - looked a cheap one to concede but a penalty nonetheless. The fourth goal came shortly after with good strength from the striker to hold off the defender before tucking the ball home. The celebrations seemed more of relief at the end for the home side, who can now look forward to another season in the top flight! Credit to Glentanar who kept competing throughout the game and made for an entertaining match despite the scoreline.
