My series The Last Guest is now featured in Vigour Magazine.

This project came from a simple idea: what happens when someone remains after everyone else has gone?

I wanted the images to feel cinematic, elegant and slightly unsettling, less like individual portraits and more like stills from a story you’ve arrived halfway through.

Seeing the series in print is particularly satisfying because it represents exactly the direction I want to keep pushing my photography: stronger narratives, darker atmosphere and images that leave a little unanswered.

Huge thanks to everyone involved in bringing The Last Guest to life, and to Vigour Magazine for giving the work a home.

Another publication, another small step forward.

I don’t often turn the camera towards landscapes, but there was something about the beach disappearing into the mist that I had to photograph.

What caught me wasn’t really the view itself. It was the scale, the silence and those tiny figures gradually being swallowed by the landscape.

A little different from my usual work, but perhaps not as different as I first thought.

Black and white felt like the only way to edit these.

I’ve been deep in the darker side of portrait photography recently, and these two shoots are a good example of why I love creating this kind of work.

Batman: Knightfall and The Raven Keeper are very different concepts, but both were approached in the same way. I didn’t just want to photograph a costume or a model. I wanted to create a character, an atmosphere and the feeling that each image belonged to a much larger story.

With Batman, I wanted something brutal, stripped back and almost noir in its approach. Heavy shadows, tight compositions and a Batman who feels less like a superhero and more like a figure emerging from the darkness.

The Raven Keeper went in a completely different direction. Gothic, mysterious and slightly unsettling, with a much more painterly quality. Again, the aim was storytelling rather than simply creating a beautiful portrait.

These personal projects give me the opportunity to experiment, push my lighting and editing, and develop ideas without worrying too much about playing it safe.

And I think that is increasingly where I’m finding my photographic voice.

Dark. Cinematic. Character driven. A little strange.

Exactly where I want to be.

People often ask why I photograph gothic and fantasy portraits.

The answer has never really been about darkness.

It has always been about stories.

I have always been drawn to old places, ruined castles, ancient churches, forgotten pathways, and landscapes that feel as though they remember the people who once walked there. They seem to hold echoes of lives that have long since passed, inviting us to imagine the stories they could tell.

Photography has become my way of bringing those stories back to life.

Every costume, location, and symbol is chosen to create the feeling that the character existed long before the shutter was pressed, and that their story continues long after the photograph is taken.

That is the heart of Mourning Light.

It is not about creating perfect portraits. It is about creating legends.

I am incredibly grateful to share that my latest article has now been published by Gothic Bite Magazine.

Mourning Light: Where Shadows Become Legends

This piece is probably the most personal thing I have written about my photography. It explores why I am drawn to the meeting place between gothic aesthetics and high fantasy, and why I believe photographs can feel like fragments of forgotten stories rather than simply portraits.

I write about the artists, films, and literature that have shaped my work, from Frank Frazetta and Fire and Ice to Gormenghast, and how living in South Wales continues to inspire the worlds I create through my camera. (Gothic Bite Magazine⁠)

A little bit of exciting news…

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of seeing my article, The Mourning of the Victorian Era in Photographs, published by Gothic Bite Magazine. Seeing my work featured alongside such fascinating writers and creators was genuinely special, and I remain incredibly grateful for the opportunity.

As both a photographer and a funeral celebrant, the article allowed me to explore something I have long been fascinated by: the way the Victorians transformed grief into ritual, symbolism, and visual storytelling. It was also wonderful to see my Victorian mourning images, featuring Emma, presented in a publication that truly appreciates gothic aesthetics and history.

And now, there is something new on the horizon.

I am delighted to share that I have a new article coming soon to Gothic Bite Magazine. I am not quite ready to reveal the subject just yet, but it is another topic very close to my heart and one that continues my love of photography, history, atmosphere, and the stories that linger in the shadows.

For now, here is a look back at my first publication and a small tease of what is to come.

As both a photographer and someone who works in the funeral industry, I have always held a fascination with the theatricality and visual aesthetic of Victorian mourning practices.

For this Viking shoot, I kept coming back to the poster for The Arena (1974). There was something about the fierce warrior women, the bold poses and the unapologetically pulp fantasy aesthetic that stayed with me.

I wasn’t interested in recreating the film scene by scene. Instead, I wanted to capture that same sense of strength, mythology and cinematic fantasy and bring it into my own visual world.

Photography often begins with a question:

“What if I could step inside the images that inspired me growing up?”

This shoot was my answer.

Cinematic Portraits & Creative Imagery

Many of you know me through Huw Lloyd Photography, where I photograph families, portraits, headshots, events, and celebrations.

Some of you may not know that I also have a second creative project called Mourning Light Photo.

Mourning Light is where I explore the more cinematic and atmospheric side of photography. It is inspired by gothic art, folklore, classic horror, mythology, and storytelling. Every image is carefully planned to create a sense of mystery and narrative, more like a scene from a film than a traditional portrait.

It is a real passion project and gives me the freedom to experiment creatively while continuing to grow as a photographer.

Please do not worry. Huw Lloyd Photography is not changing. This page will continue to focus on portraits, headshots, family photography, commercial work, and everything else you have come to know me for.
