Storm Chandra making her feelings known as she takes her anger out on South Shields pier today. Messy, challenging photography conditions having to point the camera directly into the wind and rain meant sharp, clear shots were at a premium and the wind direction meant the waves were broad rather than tall. A fun couple of hours though!

A brief experiment for a temporal photography project I'll be doing a video on shortly. This was taken from the swells that have hit the coast here in recent days and involves shooting some rapid timelapse and then slowing it right down.

Probably one of my favourite storm photos I've ever taken and a great chase day to boot - the McCook / Farnam, NE tornado back in May of 2019. A lot of people got cut off to the south by the reservoir chasing this but we approached from the north and were able to watch this thing put down about 5 or 6 tornadoes of which this rope was the best, remaining on the ground for about 15 minutes.

Storms of a different kind today, namely last night's solar storm that had everyone scrambling for gaps in the cloud in this part of the world. If I'm brutally honest, I don't think it was as great as everyone was gushing about but when there always seems to be persistent cloud cover whenever there's an outbreak, then I'll take it!!
Oh, and thanks to whoever decided to illuminate the lighthouse last night. Thats not going to ruin anyone's photograph is it? 😄

Apologies I've not posted anything since before Christmas. Family drama, videos and webpage back-end stuff is taking up all my time currently but normal service should 🤞resume shortly. Hope you're all having an amazing start to the New Year 🥳

Storm Stories - Akron, probably the most fun and intense 20 minutes of chasing I've ever had as we drove through and around multiple weak tornadoes and gustnadoes around Akron, CO.

Lets round out the week with one of my favourite lightning shots from the land where the most colourful storms are found - New Mexico. Lots of spin going on in that ragged wall cloud too. With See Nature's Fury

# # CATCH UP # # #

Hey everyone, how's it going?

Is everyone ready for Christmas? Who would rather be out chasing?

So what is everyone's favourite aspect of severe weather? Is it tornados? Structure? Lightning? The colours? This kinda feels like a strange question to ask because, although Facebook is telling me that my reach, views and followers are all increasing week on week, the lack of engagement tells me otherwise so if Facebook decides to be benevolent and this post shows up in your feed, then do tell me what your favourite aspect of severe weather is. Rather than just blindly posting content, I really want to try and make this page more of an interactive community.

I guess I should dedicate this Thursday catch up to thanking all of you who watched my inaugural Youtube video. I haven't had the guts to check how many people have watched it yet but Youtube did send me a notification congratulating me on gaining over 100 watch hours and all the feedback has been 100% positive so I'm well chuffed. I'm already hard at work on the next one which should hopefully be out before Christmas with the goal after that to release one every fortnight. If you've not watched it yet then the link to it is pinned to the top of my page and of course if you have any ideas or thoughts of what I should tackle in future videos then leave a suggestion in the comments - the more the merrier. I hasten to add that the channel will be photography oriented rather than chase oriented but there will be plenty of weather photo content on there in due course.

The attached reel is some early stage timelapse footage I'm working on (this is from Texas 2019 with lots of dust spots). Storm chasing this year was curtailed for various personal reasons (plus I was driving) so didn't get to shoot as much timelapse as I would like so I'm putting together a 'best of' video from the last 6 years or so. Its been a bit of an eye opener seeing just how far I've developed as a photographer because I look back at some of my past lapses and just want to slap myself! Anyway, this video will be a bit different and I look forward to sharing it.

Until next time, take it easy!!

Forget Gary, SD! This is some of the most mental tornado footage I've ever seen. 😲

When supercells die off and go LP like this, the lightning tends to remain in the upper reaches of the storm and in the anvil canopy leading to some spectacular displays. This storm near Lamar, CO in 2024 took all day to reach this state after splitting and racing off east. The twilight made it tricky to expose for the lightning but I'm pretty happy with this collection even if some of the bolts are a little overexposed. With See Nature's Fury

Gotta love it when a wedge tornado just casually tries to form right in front of you. This is a little bit of extended footage from my Altus reel at the weekend. It got real close but just couldn't quite focus enough and ended up spinning horizontally. Motion in the cloud was unreal and I'd wager there was at least a brief spin up just over that ridge!!
