We’re really pleased to share some exciting news from our BA Photography community here at the University of Plymouth:

Two of our current students have been shortlisted for the International Photography Exhibition (IPE) by the , what a fantastic achievement!

Congratulations to Will Maker (First Year)
and Jaiyana Chelikha .jaiyana (Third Year)!

We’re also delighted to see BA Photography alumni Rikii Altamirano and Cosimo Campagna recognised, alongside our former associate professor Simon Standing . It’s genuinely encouraging to see work from across different stages of our course and community being acknowledged together.

The IPE is one of the longest-running photographic exhibitions in the world, with a history stretching back to 1858. Organised by the Royal Photographic Society, it celebrates contemporary photography from across the globe and offers a platform for a wide range of practices, perspectives, and approaches to image-making.

Being shortlisted is a significant achievement, and we’re very proud to see our students and alumni represented in this context. 👏❤️

As we continue looking back at the Sense of Place task from the Developing Practice module, we’re really pleased to share this work by first year student Scarlett Silvester, focusing on Clevedon Pier:

'These images are taken of Clevedon Pier, a structure that was awarded the title of Grade I national monument, but is also a staple of Clevedon seafront. During the summer, the 14,000 plaques covering the floorboards and seats become a tourist attraction for the town, but over the winter its a place for the locals to come and enjoy both the view, accompanied by a meal at the restaurant.'

We’re enjoying looking back through the Sense of Place task from the Developing Practice module, so here is another one by first year student David Glover:

'These photographs were the result of my interest in the St David’s area of Exeter as a historical place, used as part of ongoing travel and a resting place for that journey. All of these buildings played a part in that history, but have since become unused or repurposed. My aim was to capture the feeling of the buildings and the history and memories that they hold.'

Following on from the last post, we’re looking back at more work from the Sense of Place task in the Developing Practice module, this time by first year student Hannah Lear, who photographed places on Dartmoor used by the military for training:

'These images capture evidence of the military using Dartmoor for training. I wanted to show Dartmoor in a way that conveys the duality of the location; how we see it as a peaceful landscape which has been protected for years but then it's simultaneously being used for military practice.'

Coming into the final weeks now and things are getting busy as everyone prepares work for deadlines. Feels like a good moment to look back at previous module work, here is a project from first year student Morwenna Burgess:

'For my Sense of Place task, I chose to focus on Duloe Stone Circle and the spiritual energy it is thought to hold. Duloe Stone Circle is Cornwall’s smallest Bronze Age stone circle. It consists of eight large white quartz stones and is believed to date back to roughly 2000–1000 BC, historically linked to burial rites after a Bronze Age urn was found there.

This area is local to me, and while I am familiar with its presence, this project gave me the opportunity to explore its history in more depth. I visited the circle numerous times a week, in different weathers and times of day. However, there was something about going at night that felt somewhat more intriguing. Using a 30-second exposure I used a torch and walked around both the inside and outsides of the stones, in order to reflect the energy I felt surrounded by.'

So great to welcome Emma Stoner this week as part of our Guest Speaker Series.

Emma spoke generously and honestly about her collaborative, storytelling approach to photography; how she connects with people, works with natural light, and stays open to what unfolds in front of the camera. It was a real insight into the thinking and care behind her images.

We really value these moments where practising artists share their processes, doubts, decisions and experiences. Hearing directly about the realities of making and sustaining a creative practice makes a huge difference for our students.

A big thank you to for spending the morning with us.
