“5 Types of Scrolling”

A huge shoutout needs to go out to Claire-louise Pitman, whose work has been showcased in the ‘Tag or Dye’ Installation in Romania. The image that is showcased is part of Claire-louise’s ‘My Scar’ project! Amazing job 👏👏

Even though the degree show ended a few months ago, we have decided to keep this account open for a little while longer to showcase some of the work that has been produced either over the summer break or in the upcoming months!

Portfolio Reviews!

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, we had an incredible opportunity to meet and talk to some of the professionals from different parts of the photography industry!

We’d like to thank Josh Greet (), Sophie Gladstone ( ) and Brendan Berry for making the time to come and talk to us about our portfolios and what it’s like to be a professional in the industry! We really appreciate it!

SURFACE Exhibition Open Evening
- Friday June 10th 2022.

Well! What an amazing evening! The SURFACE Plymouth degree show was a great success! After a very busy week, everything came together very nicely. It was great to see lots of works up on the walls in St Saviours, Lion’s Den and on the Tinside Lido. Thank you to all of the friends and family who came from across the country to see our work, we hope you enjoyed the evening!

We also need to take a moment to say a huge thank you to all of the lecturers and technicians from for all of their support, help and guidance to execute the exhibition - we wouldn’t have been able to do it without you all, so thank you! We all appreciate everything!

Well done everyone - we did it! ❤️

Annnd… going back to our showcase of final major projects, next up we have Georgia Pearson-Blake!

Georgia’s Statement: “A series of portraits looking at the identity of the youth in society and how the media has influenced their childhood. I asked each subject a series of the same 5 questions to see the range of answers and what shapes them as a person”.

Good work Georgia! For more, head over to 👈

Next up in our Final Major Project showcase, we have Ellie Michallat-Cox!

Ellie’s statement: “this project, titled ‘Keep Your Eyes Open” is a project relating to women’s street safety, especially within the mundane or everyday setting – a place which should feel safe. These locations were all captured on a Polaroid camera and then scanned using an iPhone. I chose these techniques because the Polaroid itself is a one-off snapshot which emulates an individual experience. And the scanning technique using the iPhone emulated a loss of control, which many women unfortunately experience within the street setting. The idea of the mundane was used to highlight the tragic commonality of such incidents in the street setting. My aim was to explore a current and prominent issue within my Resolution photographic practice.”

Next up we have Claire-Louise Pitman!

Here is her statement: “My project 'once upon a time' centres on my memory boxes which started before I was born. The work features sentimental items captured in an unusual way by using the method scannography. Others may think these sorts of items are not worth keeping. For me it's normal to have a memory box, so I was surprised it's not the norm for everyone.
One of the reasons I keep these objects is because I cannot smell. It is useful for me to hold and see these objects from a memory where I was physically there to take me back to that place".

Next up we have Jack Brackenbury!

Jack’s statement: "Local Scars" looks at how man has tamed the landscapes of Devon and Cornwall. The series focusses on social engineering projects such as viaducts, bridges, dams, and railway lines. It asks if these structures are scars on the surrounding landscapes, and makes the viewer question the beauty or the ugliness of the engineering projects.”

Next up we in our Final Major Project showcase, we have Roesie Percy.

Here is her statement: “Can you imagine training to compete at the highest level whilst also studying for a degree at one of the Top 20 universities in the world? It requires organisation, discipline and dedication. Like most elite athletes, rowers have to sacrifice certain things, wake up at stupid o’clock in the morning and push their bodies past their limits, all in the hope of making the boat go faster and crossing the line first on race day. These photographs were taken of high performance student athletes over the course of the 2022 rowing season. They say and as you can see, you earn your medals in the winter and collect them in the summer”.

Next up we have Lauren Lane’s final major project. Here is her statement:

"My project ‘This Fishing Life’ focuses on the UK’s fishing industry, primarily in Devon and Cornwall.
The work highlights the efforts of fishermen and others in the industry that work sustainably, and acts as a plea for us, as consumers, to do our research and support the most responsible fishing practices. My images also present some of the South’s largest, most reputable fisheries and markets, as well as recognising how local communities of coastal towns and the wider community can come together in supporting the industry to help it thrive for years to come."

Today’s Final Major Project belongs to Toby Wood!

Toby’s statement: 'Man and Machine' is a series of images entailing the details of BMX that are often overlooked by people outside the world of BMX. I wanted to showcase the two substyles of BMX which are 'Street ' and 'Park' with two subjects in order to compare through the use of the studio. 'Man and Machine' is a piece of work to teach people about BMX in a style that is unlike a typical photograph from action sports to which people can compare the two differences seen in the images above.”

Great job Toby! For more of Toby’s work, head over to .wood.photography 👈🚴🏼
