Tourism has the power to do more than create memorable experiences.
It can help shape the future of communities, landscapes, and wildlife.
One of the things that inspired us about our Scotland experience was helping a traditional Scottish hunting lodge evolved to welcome photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, and nature lovers from around the world.
For generations, many rural estates across Scotland relied on traditional land-use models to support local jobs and maintain historic properties. Today, some are exploring new opportunities through nature-based tourism and wildlife experiences.
It's a shift that reflects a growing demand for experiences that connect people with nature while supporting local economies.
Photographers, birders, hikers, and wildlife enthusiasts now contribute to businesses, accommodations, guides, restaurants, transportation providers, and communities that benefit from sustainable tourism.
The landscapes themselves remain the star of the show.
But perhaps one of the most exciting parts of the story is seeing how tourism can help diversify opportunities for rural communities while encouraging people to appreciate and value the natural world.

For most of my life, I was the person who took care of everyone else.
I was always putting other people's needs first.
My family.
My work.
My responsibilities.
The people who depended on me.
Like many women, I became very good at making sure everyone else was okay while rarely asking myself if I was okay.
Eventually, that way of living started to catch up with me.
I was exhausted.
Overwhelmed.
Running on empty.
And if I'm being honest, it almost broke me.
Then photography entered my life.
At first, it was simply something I enjoyed.
A reason to spend time outside.
A reason to be in nature.
But over time, it became much more than that.
Photography gave me permission to slow down.
To step away from the noise.
To spend time alone without feeling guilty about it.
To make space for myself.
For an hour, a morning, or sometimes an entire day, my focus shifted away from everything that needed me.
Instead, I was watching a bird.
Following the light.
Listening to the wind.
Waiting for a wildlife encounter.
Paying attention to the small details I had been rushing past for years.
Photography taught me something I desperately needed to learn:
You cannot pour from an empty cup.
Taking care of yourself isn't selfish.
It's necessary.
Today, some of my most treasured moments aren't the photographs I bring home.
They're the moments of peace I experience while creating them.
The moments where I feel grounded.
Present.
Connected.
And reminded that I matter too.
That's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about photography, nature, and wellness.
Because sometimes a camera becomes much more than a camera.
Sometimes it becomes the thing that helps you find your way back to yourself.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is say yes.

Yes to the trip you’ve been dreaming about.
Yes to stepping outside your comfort zone.
Yes to experiences that will stay with you long after the journey ends.

At the end of the day, memories are one of the few things we get to keep forever.

Brazil stole my heart in ways I never expected. The wildlife, the people, the landscapes, and the incredible encounters we experienced every single day left me completely in awe. Some moments felt almost impossible to believe, yet there we were, living them.

Everyone loves bears.
But one of the most important species in the entire ecosystem spends much of its life hidden beneath the water.
Salmon.
Every year, salmon undertake one of nature's most incredible journeys. After spending years in the Pacific Ocean, they return to the rivers and streams where they were born, sometimes traveling hundreds of kilometers to reach their spawning grounds.
It is an extraordinary feat.
But the story doesn't end there.
The arrival of salmon fuels the entire rainforest.
Bears gather along rivers to feed.
Eagles line the trees overhead.
Wolves patrol the riverbanks.
Even the towering trees benefit.
When bears carry salmon into the forest, nutrients from the ocean are distributed throughout the ecosystem. Those nutrients become part of the soil, helping support the growth of the rainforest itself.
Scientists have even found marine nutrients from salmon in the needles of trees growing far from the river.
Think about that for a moment.
A fish that spends most of its life in the ocean helps feed a forest.
This is why conservation is rarely about a single species.
Protecting salmon helps protect bears.
Protecting bears helps distribute nutrients.
Protecting rivers helps support forests.
Everything is connected.
At Focus Photo Tours, one of the things we love most about places like the Great Bear Rainforest is how clearly they demonstrate these relationships. Every wildlife encounter becomes part of a larger story about ecosystems, conservation, and the incredible connections that sustain life.
