It's World Photography Day

Although I may not pick up the camera today last week we had a few days away in Norfolk, the weather was amazing with blue skies every day, so here are a few holiday snaps.
There was certainly a variety of locations from the tranquillity of Ludham, the fascinating Horsey Windpump and the endless amusement arcades of Great Yarmouth. This was my first time in Great Yarmouth, I was saddened to see the Winter Gardens and Windmill Theatre which must have been great places to vist in their day.

CHRISTMAS MORNING ON THE BEACH

On 25 December over twenty years ago a decision was made, we were going to spend Christmas morning at the beach, so began an annual tradition. We would wake early, (but not too early), fill the Thermos, pack some snacks, not forgetting the mince pies, jump in the car then head for the beach. Wrapped up warm against the bracing sea breeze there is no better way to clear out the cobwebs. At the time, living in Wiltshire placed us just over an hour from the closest beach although we would often travel a little further.

Time moves on, lives change, last year we moved north to the middle of the country placing the beach out of reach, so ending another tradition.
Ho-Hum.

I photographed these two on Christmas morning 2011 at Knoll Beach, Studland as they sat on the dunes with their Christmas hats and pack lunches, they watched as waves rolled up the beach, laughed at the dogs running excitedly trying to avoid the waves with their tails wagging they made new friends and discovered new smells, the couple simply observed as the World went by. I like to think they will be there this year keeping my Christmas morning tradition alive.

I have played with the sky and added a little festive snow to the photograph but for me this is the ideal Christmas morning.

Happy Christmas One and All.
So it goes.

WINTER SOLSTICE

I used to live in Wiltshire and drove past Stonehenge almost every day but never visited during the Summer Solstice. For me the Winter Solstice was more important, it always seemed logical that our ancestors would celebrate the coming of longer days and the return of the Sun with its warmth.
I took these photographs sixteen years ago at the Winter Solstice of 2005.

It was 29 March 1981, the rain was falling, it was time for the first London Marathon.

I've been looking through some old negatives of the day. Having spent several hours wandering around London taking pictures I drove home via Thames Ditton, probably just to finish a roll of film. The cars are from the AC cars factory show room.
