Trotternish Ridge from the Quiraing

I made this picture in early spring using a 20 year old camera which gives a very unique colour to the pictures, the camera in question being the 'Nikon D200'. The Quiraing on the Isle of Skye is one of my most favourite places I have ever visited by day or night. I still remember the first time I saw it with my own eyes; it left such an indescribable impression on me that I constantly yearn to do the long drive to see it time and time again. Other countries have higher peaks, and larger "lakes", however Scotland has something truly unique that nowhere else can match.

Autumnal Milky Way over Black Rock Cottage, Glen Coe

Summer is basically here. But what does an Astrophotographer do in Scotland at this time of year?

They wait, until darkness returns, and they can see the universe again. Hello darkness my old friend...

Facing the Witch

Just a few nights ago I captured the faint north tail of the milky way including the constellations Auriga (left), Perseus (centrally, over the grave), and Cassiopeia on the right. The aurora gave a very meaningful appearance too, with greens and purples very clear to see. Note the different star colours here? The stars are not all white dots! This grave is a curious monument to every woman burned as a witch around the world, and is found in Dunning, Scotland. A very dark period in the history of our species, for sure!

NB: The light in front of the grave is from my other camera and the shadow is myself, adjusting a few settings.

Glen Lyon, Perthshire

Afternoon all. Here is one of my favourite pictures from Glen Lyon, taken with a camera that is over two decades old. It is fun to use old tech to create something a bit different!

Glen Lyon is the longest enclosed glen in Scotland and runs for 34 miles in length. Deep in the heart of Glen Lyon, the 'Praying Hands' also known as Fionn's Rock, is a mysterious rock formation consisting of two huge stones that rise together as if they were hands in prayer.

Milky Way over Lunan Bay Scotland

It's that time of year when Earth is positioned just right in the northern hemisphere to see the milky way arch sweep up along the eastern coastline here. Unfortunately, it happens at 4am so I am tired.

Orion over the Quiraing, Isle of Skye

One of my favourite locations day and night, showing the faint tail of the milky way sitting over Orion on the left. The green colour here is faint aurora. Behind me, the aurora was very strong, but I was much more interested in the view I came for, right here.

Starlight through Mist At Loch Earn

On Saturday gone, my son and I hiked the hills North of Loch Earn in the dead of night, carrying some specialist and heavy astrophotography equipment. It is quite a steep climb up, and as we huffed and puffed we got so warm as we hiked with our gear and winter clothing, knowing it would be freezing cold at the summit.

My son is very interested in physics and space, and although we didn't get the perfect clear skies I had hoped for us due to mist and cloud, we were thankful to see these views for a fleeting moment. I have been trying to get this shot for few years now and I am often clouded out when doing so. This year at least something happened - the glow of the constellations through the mist and the kiss of aurora on the right made it worthwhile. It's one for next year, we will try again. It's never a wasted moment when you spend nights like this under dark skies with your son.

NB: Yes I have some aurora pictures facing North, but it wasn't really the goal of the trip that night.
