Balmoral Castle has origins dating back to the reign of King Robert Il of Scotland (1316-1390), who had a hunting lodge in the area. Records also indicate that a house at Balmoral was built by Sir William Drummond in 1390.
The estate is recorded in 1451 as
"Bouchmorale"
and later was tenanted
by Alexander Gordon, second son of the 1st Earl of Huntly. In 1662 the estate passed to Charles Farquharson of Inverey.
The Farquharsons, as Jacobite
sympathisers, were involved in both the 1715 and 1745 rebellions.

In 1798, James Duff, 2hd Earl Fife, acquired Balmoral. Robert Gordon, a younger brother of the 4th Earl of Aberdeen, acquired the lease in 1830, making major alterations to the original castle, including baronial-style extensions that were designed by John Smith of Aberdeen.

In 1852 Balmoral Castle became the Scottish home of the Royal Family after it was purchased for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert.
From then onwards, the castle has remained a beloved home to successive monarchs. In particular, Queen Elizabeth II held great affection for Balmoral Castle. It was well known to be her favourite home, a place where she could enjoy the tranquility and freedom of the surroundings. Queen Elizabeth Il spent her tinal days at the castle, passing away there in 2022.
