Last night I went "Night Hiking" again. This time to Stonehenge, Wiltshire, UK
Another great night 11.00pm -4.00am

I only managed to get a 30sec tracked shot of the milky way as the clouds rolled in as soon as i got setup.
I hung around hoping for the skies to clear, unfortunately not.
Just before it started to get light, i got my foreground shots and headed home.

Had a lovely conversation with the security guard, who were very friendly and even let me know before they turned on their big torches.

It was defiantly worth the drive !

The Milky way galactic core rising over St Michael’s Mount.

Another great night 11.00pm -2.30am

Even with all the light pollution and 33% moon, I just about managed to get a shot.

I will definitely be back here later in the season for some more pics !

Last night I went "Night Hiking" again, This time back to Lanyon Quoit near Madron, Penzance.

The Milky way galactic core rising over the tomb stones.

If you look closely on the bottom right of the Milky Way you will see the Great Dark Horse Nebula.

Had a lovely night out from midnight - 4.30am, First stop was St Michael's Mount, But unfortunately the cloud had rolled in.

However I did happen to bump into Cherrie Photography who was teaching a workshop. I was ready to crawl back into my bed and call it a night. The clouds looked thick and slow moving.

Cherrie Photography said they were going to head up to Lanyon Quoit and kindly offered for me to tag along. I reluctantly excepted as I thought the cloud was in for the night, But FOMO had kicked in !!! I would of been gutted if I had missed this !

Im so glad I did go!!!

Last night I went "Night Hiking" again, This time to Avebury stone circle. In hope of shooting the Milky way galactic core for the first time .

I got a little spooked by the dozen or so pairs of eye staring at me through the stone.......... sheep, just sheep, not pixies !
What a night, completely clear skies (for a change) I thought everything had gone well until I got home and looked at my images, Something had gone slightly wrong with my tracker (operator error) So the images are not as good as I hoped, I was over excited for the core and probably messed up my polar alignment.
Anyway not bad for a first go.

Saying Goodbye to Orion (in the Northern Hemisphere) until November.

Here is Orion in all its glory.

Image 1: I took this a few weeks ago and completely forgot about it. The red you can see is Barnard's Loop (Sh 2-276) an emission nebula, Under very dark skies may be able to see it with the naked eye, But this image was taken with a tracked long exposure and a Hydrogen alpha filter.

Image 2: Taken last year, The Orion Nebula (M42) a massive, bright stellar nursery located roughly 1,350 light-years away from earth. Taken with my telescope.

Image 3: Taken last year, The Horsehead Nebula (B33) & The Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) located about 1,375 light-years from earth.
Taken with my telescope.

Image 4: Drawn by my Nan over 30 years ago and sent to me as a child in a letter. She was a passionate amateur astronomer. Unfortunately at the time I was very young and didn't appreciate the night sky as I do now. Every time I see Orion I say "Hi Nan" Hopefully she would be proud of my new found love for the night sky.

Anyway see you in November Orion (Nan)

Last night I went "Night Hiking" This time to the Devils Den, Wiltshire.
For this image I used a Hydrogen Alpha clip in filter to bring out Barnards loop (the red looking upside down ?) in Orion. This was my first go using the filter and I found it quite difficult. Very fiddly to put in and out and a pig to focus.

I had really hoped for longer exposure on Orion but with all the faffing with the filter I had missed most of my cloud window.

We live and learn ! The image isn't exactly how I imagined it and it definitely not my best ! But I will try this type of image again, Hopefully with clearer skies and more time or less faf lol

Last night the clouds parted !!! So I managed to do some imaging with the telescope !
Full moons not the best for Deep sky imaging but I had a go anyway !
1: NGC 2174 Monkey Head Nebula around 4 hours of 10sec exposures
2: Mineral Moon waxing gibbous
3: Tracked and stacked Moon waxing gibbous (more detail)

Lets hope the skies stay clear so I can do some more !!!

Last night I went "Night Hiking" to Chun Quoit near St Just, Penzance.
Interesting night ! The weather forecast predicted that I would get clear skies around 6pm. So I hiked through the worst terrain I have encountered on my "Night hiking" so far ! Heavily flooded and very slippery. I arrived at the location and the cloud was still thick with no breaks in sight, I had a brew and chilled for about an hour with no improvement ! Oh well I will head home !

Hiked back to the car, back through the flooding ! Most of the way looking down at the ground to avoid falling over. Got to the car and looked up ! The skies had miraculously cleared, Sods law ! Right back we go !!!!!!!!
I got about 2 hours clear skies in the end. Knackered !! But got my shots ! I will definitely go back here in the summer when the galactic core is visible.

Last night I went "Night Hiking" to Glastonbury Tor, Somerset.
I was on the hunt for aurora borealis as the KP index was looking good ! I headed out after the bad weather had past, I spent from 12am-3am on the Tor.
It didn't go well ! Not a sausage !!

So I took some star trail pics instead !
