A morning I’ll never forget 🐬💙 Feel free to share 🙌

My first ever encounter with Risso’s dolphins from my paddle board ✔️

First a big male glided past, then a mum and her baby appeared and she rolled onto her side to feed her calf right in front of my board. 🥹 Further out, a couple were tail-slapping and engaged in what looked like social play.

So incredibly special to witness — but always with respect for their space. I stayed completely still and quiet as they swam past before shaking and laughing with excitement once they had gone 😆

Just 18 seconds of video, but a memory that will stay with me forever. ✨ Have you seen Risso’s dolphins before?

I have a lot of videos to go through but for now, here are a few photos.

Shame the photo is overexposed but how about that teeny tiny one flying in the air? 🥰

I do appreciate a good review 🥰Not so keen on the bad ones 😉 So if you have 5 minutes , feel free to add one 🙌 ...

What a treat 🤩

Feel free to share 🙌

Customers were treated to first class seats on the return journey from Torquay and watched this pod of common dolphins and gannets feed together just off Babbacombe.

I don’t know who was more excited; the kids or the adults?

I nearly lost my GoPro taking this video, but it was 100% worth it! 😱🐬🩵

This clip gives you an amazing look at what goes on under the surface when dolphins decide to come and play. Keep your eyes peeled a few seconds in—you can clearly see them do a sharp U-turn just to rush over and swim right alongside us!It really makes you think. When we head out on boat trips hoping to catch a glimpse of them, the feeling is mutual. Sometimes they are just as keen to see us as we are to see them! 😍🌊⭐

🐬 UPDATE: The mystery of Brixham's notched dolphin MAY have an explanation...

Having finally reviewed all my footage, and spoken to several marine mammal experts, here are my thoughts (not facts):
The notch in this common dolphin’s dorsal fin is believed to be an old, well healed injury.
The dolphins who were spotted in Brixham Harbour at the weekend appear to be two males and two females.
One likely explanation is that these four dolphins had broken away from the main pod for social and courtship behaviour, rather than simply feeding.
I witnessed one of the males attempt to mate with the dolphin with the dorsal injury, but she firmly pushed him away. (Sadly, the footage is not exactly PG so you'll have to take my word for that one!)
Another possibility is that the notched female could be pregnant, although there's no way to know for certain from observation alone. She's very easily recognisable, so if anyone spots her around the bay over the coming weeks or months, keep an eye out to see if she's accompanied by a calf.

If you know anyone around the South Devon coast, please share this post. It would be amazing to see photos or videos of this distinctive female again—and even more exciting if she's later seen with a calf 🥰

Were you one of the many people who witnessed this in Brixham Harbour yesterday? I’d love to hear your memories, photos, or videos in the comments. 🐬💙

It’s not unusual for common dolphins to enter the harbour for a few hours (sometimes even the whole day) before returning to sea. However, one of the four had an injured fin, and what we witnessed in front of hundreds of people looked to be truly special.

The other three dolphins stayed with the injured dolphin all day, showing what might have been epimeletic behaviour—a remarkable display of care and support seen in highly social species. Swimming closely alongside it, helping it move through the water while providing companionship and protection.

As the sun set, I left with a heavy heart, fearing the injured dolphin might not make it. But amazingly, by morning all four dolphins had returned to sea. 🤩

Maybe it was ok after all? After reviewing my photos, the injuries on the dorsal fin looked old and completely healed.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped keep people at a safe distance and give these dolphins the space they needed. 🙌
