Manual Mode gets MUCH easier when you stop looking at ISO, aperture + shutter speed as three things you need to constantly juggle šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

Instead, I want you to make three decisions, in the same order, every time:

LIGHT → FOCUS → BALANCE.

That’s it.

The more you practise this order, the less you’ll panic and the more instinctive it becomes.

And THAT is when you can stop thinking so much about your camera + start thinking about the images you actually want to make!

Save this for your next shoot + follow along for more, Girl to Girl tips āš”ļø

šŸ’Œ If you’d like me to fast track you, comment START + I’ll send you details of my six-week beginners course, Start Where You Are, beginning 14th September.

I first came across manual mode from a male photographer, and the jargon flying my way completely overwhelmed me - it actually nearly stopped me from progressing with photography.

But when I eventually got to the crux of each technical lesson, I realised most of it was actually pretty simple. It just me a long while to crack it!

So reducing that time became my one-woman mission 😜

Teaching photography in a way that feels fun, makes sense and actually works with your brain is the bit I care about most.

Because once you become confident capturing your own visual stories, you won’t believe the changes that follow ✨

If you want to make the most of your spenny camera, off auto forever and take your first picture in manual mode, I have a free 30min workshop that’s tried and tested!

šŸ’Œ Comment AUTO and it’s yours!

Because so much of photography isn’t about having a good eye - it’s knowing what to do once you’ve noticed something ✨

When to stay put and when to let someone walk into the frame. And most importantly, when not to give up on a photo too quickly.

That’s the kind of thing we work on inside my life-changing beginners photography course, START WHERE YOU ARE - alongside getting you off auto and into manual mode with confidence.

The technical matter but telling your story and making people feel something when they see your images is what I focus on!

This week, I had a whirlwind trip to Marseille šŸ‡«šŸ‡· , firstly to meet a wonderful family and take pictures for a 50th birthday, before heading into the city for 24 hours of solo wandering.

It’s something I’m always a little reluctant to do, but what gets me over the line every time is my camera. Without it, I’d feel completely lost.

I like to read a city with my settings, and Marseille encapsulated a slow shutter speed for me. Its grittiness + creativity called for that kind of visual.

Do you ever do that when you land in a city?
Adapt the way you shoot to what the city needs?

And if you want to conquer photography so you never have to feel alone on a solo trip, my beginners course START WHERE YOU ARE is back on 14th September - 10 discounted spots are being released to the WAITLIST at 10am tomorrow!

Last week, I took a trip to Porto to see the Vivian Maier exhibition šŸ‡µšŸ‡¹

I came away massively inspired + within days, I’d built an entirely new FREE photography challenge because I wanted you to feel some of what I felt walking around that room.

Because your photographs can become SO much more magnetic with just a few small changes.

You don’t need a better camera or a more exciting life.
You just need to slow down and go beyond the first shot 😜

ā€˜Through Viv’s Eyes’ is a FREE 3-day challenge with short audio lessons + daily prompts - for cameras or phones, and complete beginners are very welcome.

Comment VIV and I’ll send you the link šŸ’›

What I’ve learned from 5 years of teaching photography is this…

Nobody starts from scratch.

Before you ever learn the exposure triangle, you’ve already spent a lifetime collecting things…

Colours you’re always drawn to.
Films you’ve watched 100 times.
Family photo albums.
Places you can’t forget and keep returning to.
People. Clothes. Light. Music. Art.
The stuff you noticed as a kid.
When you’re at your happiest.

It all goes in your LIFE BAG 🧳

And eventually, when you pick up a camera, some of it starts finding its way back out again.

I think we put so much pressure on ourselves to find our photography style, when actually, so much of it is already there.

You’re not starting from scratch.
You’re learning how to photograph what already belongs to you.

And seeing as it’s National Photography Day today, it’s a wonderful thing to remember šŸ’›

If you’d to like to learn photography, my life-changing beginners course starts on 14th September…

never over living 10 mins from the beach with only one camera + one lens taken.

ideally I would’ve had my zoom for more candid portraiture + details, but I’ll take what I got.

that’s the thing about photography - we beat ourselves up about the shots we didn’t get, rather than embrace the ones we did.

if you want to learn photography (bye auto mode) plunge into creativity, grow in confidence and capture amazing visual stories…

…comment START to learn all about my beginners photography course, returning 14th September. It will probably change your life! 😜

A lot of things I’ve struggled with all my life make so much sense now I’m a photographer/coach.

1 - I notice and feel EVERYTHING

It can make me hyper-aware, anxious and self-conscious, but I also have an instinctual spidey sense for details, light, lines and the tiny things others miss.

Turns out being distracted by everything is pretty handy when your job is to notice.

2 - I get bored easily and constantly need to change things up

In an old job, I was told they didn’t want to promote me because I was good at my job - replacing me would be too much hassle, so I kept doing the same things over and over - my idea of hell.

Being a photographer, coach AND business owner gives my brain the variation and challenge it craves.

3 - I’ve always been faddy, which also means I can HYPERFOCUS

I can lose ridiculous amounts of time to an obsession, but I also NEED the pressure of a deadline to properly kick into gear.

Give me something urgent and I can pull off a monster editing session (sometimes DAYS), which my profit margin bloody loves. I can also write an entire course in supersonic time because apparently who needs sleep when there’s a deadline looming.

4 - My brain makes random connections

I’m a film buff, so my eyes constantly pick up composition, light and colour and recycle them into my own work, often without me realising.

I’ll forget a conversation, but show me a photo and I’ll remember what everyone was wearing.

My brain has always stored things visually. Photography finally gave all those random connections somewhere to go.

5 - I’m impulsive, which hasn’t always been great for employers but…

…I can now direct it.

I follow ideas before I can talk myself out of them, change things mid-shoot, try the weird angle and take the photo even when I don’t quite know why.

Which one do you relate to most? Or what would you add? šŸ‘‡
