We had a wee visitor to the bridge on our big steam across the Sea of the Hebrides today. Poor wee guy was very tired so hung about with and then headed off into the wind once we sighted land at Mingulay.

With storm Floris charging in from the West, I thought I'd share a snap of an Atlantic Puffin from a calmer day at the Shiants few weeks back.

Spending time watching these charismatic little birds is always a treat, its easy to see how their clumsy landings and wee chuckles make them as beloved as they are.

I didn't stay up late for the bells this year, so missed all the fireworks and celebrations - so instead here's some attempts at a style of photography I've not done before: Storm chasing.
What better opportunity to try than the incredible storms that hit the Turkish coast last week.

Sitting with the waves crashing onto the beach and the cracks of thunder shaking the sand below was humbling to say the least.

2024 has been full of new things for me: new islands, new experiences, and new direction. I can't wait for what 2025 will hold.

Happy New Year?

White-tailed Eagle from Loch na Keal, the Isle of Mull.

This is one of a pair who have been frequently sighted at the Loch over the last few seasons, a couple small boats run trips to the area and throw food out for them - which draws them in closer than they might normally get. While I am unsure on the ethics of this practice, it does mean that when I'm in the area I also get a chance to see them up close.

No matter how many times I witness their enormous size and power, it never gets old.

Absolutely awesome day with a large pod of common dolphins between Canna and Skye aboard MV Glen Shiel. Our guests were delighted by the feeding frenzy of gannets and gulls followed by the dolphins leaping and bow-riding along with us for some of our steam across to Inverie.

Big thanks to for the shout - glad to have caught the party!

This impossibly sad looking drinker moth (Euthrix potatoria) was stuck in the detritus of a freshly strimmed verge - while I can appreciate the need to manage overgrowth on paths and pavements it is always a shame to see the impact that this management can have on invertebrates.

The males (like this one) possess these stunning deeply combed antennae which they use to detect the pheromones of female moths from great distances away.

After posing for a couple snaps this fuzzy friend was safely deposited into some undergrowth a little further from the road.
